Shamas - you may have noticed there's a family mart before the departure tax checkpoint. Cheap as hell. Personally I eat before heading to the airport. I think anyone who has been in the transit lounge at Taipei, knows what a bad airport is. There's two disgusting, overpriced cafeterias and no access to money changers or ATMs. I was about to eat my shoes during the 4 hour layover. Talk about rinky dink. I know I'm part of the probelm, but how the hell did we get up to 41 pages on a topic as transitory as the airport? This dwarfs the amount of pages on any new nightlife happenings since the airport has opened. I think most of us spend about 4 hours total in it per trip. Amazing! Shame on us all for being so finicky and boring. EDIT IN : I've just pushed it up to 42.

Arrived Thursday 11 AM. What a long walk to immigration... even with the moving sidewalk... kept looking up to see if there was a people mover but didn't see one. At least immigration was quick... plenty of lines. My luggage was already on the carousel. Went up to the third level to the MH ticketing counter. Orbitz couldn't give me an advanced seat reservation, so I wanted to get preassigned seats for my return trip. (What a treat to fly an airline - Malaysia Airlines - where the flight attendents actually appeared to enjoy their work. Unlike Northworst which I normally fly. Especially flight attendant Maria Eden who was a garden of delight.) Then down to lower level to catch a cab... there really are no signs at all to direct you to the taxis. Just follow the signs for bus transport. Taxi driver spoke very good English. Asked me if I wanted to take expressway or not. I did, even though the exit to Suk was horribly backed up. 350 baht with tolls to the Sheraton Grand. Gave him a good tip.

Dear All, Please note that I do NOT have any bad agenda against the new Airport. I am just merely reporting what was reported in the Bangkok Post and The Nation newspapers - that's all !

Black Cat Thanks for the heads up on the Family Mart, I had not seen it. As far as eating goes I generally do not eat at the air ports but I've had the misfortune of being stranded for hours on end so my stomach has growled "Feed Me". Shamas O'Dognasty

Just arrived back in BKK – must say they have improved the arrival area quite a bit since first opening. They have temporary railing set up to keep the people back and some decent signs to indicate taxi locations. Now there is actually room to take a breath before heading into the throng of touts. A far cry better than it was before – tis a shame that due to a pretty crummy design they have rather limited room to work with and it will likely never really be as good as a truly international caliber airport should be.

Chapter 42 of ???"Where Did They Go Wrong"??? Lets see, the new airport is built on a swamp, there is a powerful spirit that is pissed off that his swamp has been messed up, graft and corruption is a way of business and the new airport was designed by people with no experience designing airports. ???Where did they go wrong??? Now they are talking about reopening Don Muang. DM has NO equipment left. The place was left bared as equipment was moved out to the new airport. Nothing else remains now. Reopening DM is a pipe dream and it also shows how totally inept and comical the Thai Airport Authority is. DM was never considered for reopening, it's a shell that has had NO up keep or maintenance and has been closed up in the hot and humid Thai weather. Reopening DM will be yet another Joke/failure. Want to bet on how much of the electrical inftrstructure has already been stripped out of DM. Runway lights, radios, silly little things like this do actually count. ROTFLOL! Yeah, but you are at least honest and open about where your opinion sides... Other than that, you pretty much summarized the situation well - especially the part about it being designed by people with no experience designing airports. It's obvious, though it's a big, functional airport, that it is just turning into a much larger version of Don Muang - i.e. all the flaws that could have been avoided are now being patched. Don Muang at least had the excuse of being 92 years old.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 30 December 2006 :- Airport boasts fade to ignominy - Slipshod work could force partial closure ============================================ Suvarnabhumi airport's opening on Sept 28 was a major event of 2006. But boasting about its world-class facilities quickly faded as revelations of slipshod construction led to a countdown to its partial closure for repairs. Planning for the airport, at Nong Ngu Hao (cobra swamp) in Samut Prakan, began over four decades ago, with its opening repeatedly postponed from 2000. Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra took a personal interest in pushing for its early opening, including putting pressure on the builders by camping out at the site with his cabinet. His government made much of the airport having the largest single terminal and tallest air traffic control tower. Despite the change of government after the Sept 19 coup, authorities managed to open Suvarnabhumi on schedule. But it was not long before they found that the previous postponements were not enough to ensure a well-built, efficient airport. New problems kept surfacing. The passenger terminal roof leaked and there was inadequate lighting at night. During the daytime, sunlight pouring in through the terminal's glass structure makes working conditions uncomfortable for immigration police in the departure zone. They must depend on makeshift sunshades. The floors of the terminal have numerous cracks and the concreting is rough and unfinished. Taxiways and airport parking bays are also cracked, a consequence of building the airport on top of a swamp. The revolving doors have proven impractical with 17 of the 26 having broken down, and their glass panes have also cracked. Airports of Thailand (AoT) will replace them with sliding doors _ at a cost of at least 10 million baht. There are too few toilets and the toilet areas are too far apart. Authorities have admitted that space originally designated for toilets was instead given over to shops. Excessive shopping outlets and food and beverage facilities make for narrow walking passages in the terminal. Passengers must struggle through the shopping areas to reach their departure gates. Arriving passengers exiting customs are channelled into narrow walkways squeezed between shops and vending outlets. The crowded passages are packed with touts for expensive airport limousines. The fire-fighting systems and fire exits are also different from the original design. Recently, Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um admitted that essential repairs and improvements to the three-month-old airport would require its partial closure. Pending completion of the task, the 92-year-old Don Muang airport would have to be reactivated. AoT board member Yodyiam Theptranont, who has closely studied Suvarnabhumi's problems, said the estimated cost of the work was at least 1.5 billion baht. The problems are being discussed with airport designers and contractors, who will draw up detailed lists and set priorities. The countdown to Suvarnabhumi's partial closure is already ticking away. Apart from the physical problems, Suvarnabhumi has managerial and workflow problems as well. Staff are still unfamiliar with the luggage handling system. At peak hours, check-in queues for Thai Airways International stretch outside the terminal. Queues for public metered taxis snake outside on the ground level in a semi-orderly fashion, with chits issued to drivers and passengers, but drivers of illegal taxis prey on arrivals indoors. Ongoing construction leaves labourers working near passengers and this has led to complaints of sexual harassment.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 30 December 2006 :- Suvarnabhumi Airport braces for peak ============================= Suvarnabhumi Airport is bracing for a major test as the holiday travel season approaches its peak. An additional 32,000 passengers - 20,000 on international flights and 10,000 on domestic flights - are expected to pass through Bangkok's new airport between Dec 25 and Jan 5. Twenty-eight airlines are adding a total of 274 air movements - both take-offs and landings - during the 12-day period, on top of the normal daily rate of 750-800 movements. The additional movements would involve 123 international services and 151 domestic ones, according to Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT), the operator of Thailand's six major airports. Today is expected to be the busiest day with 50 additional take-offs and landings scheduled. However, the increases in passengers and flights fall well short of those recorded in the same period last year, when 305 additional take-offs and landings and 42,700 more passengers were processed through the old Don Muang airport. The reduced totals this year may indicate a marginal slowdown in tourist traffic in the current holiday season, Suvarnabhumi Airport director Somchai Sawasdeepol said yesterday. Heavy traffic has prompted AoT to step up efforts to provide convenience, security and safety at Suvarnabhumi Airport. According to AoT, the new airport handled about 3.4 million passengers in October, down 0.1% from the same period last year, and 3.65 million passengers in November, up 3.5%. A total of 100 carriers are currently operating through Suvarnabhumi, 79 of which are passenger airlines, 13 freight carriers and eight airlines operating on a code-share basis. The AoT-operated airports at Chiang Mai and Phuket are also busy, with 14 and 51 additional take-offs and landings respectively over the holiday period.
