nymick, I agree with you. It was very hard to get information from any US-based media about what is really happening in Thailand now. I checked places like reuters and bangkok post to get some details. On-line forums (like this one) who have people "on the ground" giving updates (thanks BK, PL69 and others) have valuable information. And, I've been getting direct reports from some people I know who are there. My wife is very, very sad. Thai killing Thai - she can't believe it. And, at least 1 bomb in Ubon that we know about. At least no one is hoarding food or water here.

Nothing in Sukhumvit is open. Even the 7-11s are closed. Things must be serious. Glad to be getting out of #bangkok today. #redshirts / according to Paul Carson

BK, my buddy, that we had Korean BBQ with, told me that is boss said stay in Hua Hin until the end of the month, and another buddy of mine is off an extra 2 weeks and is in Samui!!!! This is just comedy that I was thinking about, nothing serious, but if you know me I can laugh at everything! I have a question, and I know it would never happen, but what if they allowed a qualified farang to run the country? How funny would that be....We present to you all, the man that will solve all this, "Greg" he is half thai/ half farang who is an outstanding undergraduate of Harvard University, where is father is a professor, and first in is class at Oxford Law, while earning his MBA at Wharton...He is fluent in English, German, Thai, Cantonese, Mandarin, and he wants to support education reform first and foremost for poor villagers! His MOST URGENT cause will be getting the poor village people an opportunity at a uni education!!!! 55555! he would be stabbed in the liver in 10 minutes! They dont care about making Thailand better! atl

The extension of the holiday will give authorities more time to resolve the crisis, he said. The government earlier declared Monday and Tuesday of this week as public service holidays, as the violence and street battles continue in the capital.

Report from Reuters dated Tuesday 18 May 2010 :- Tourist arrivals drop sharply ===================== The intensifying political violence has pounded the country's tourist industry, with arrivals down by about one third, Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa said on Tuesday. The number of incoming passengers at Suvarnabhumi airport had dwindled from an average 30,000 to 20,000 passengers a day, as foreigners were concerned about the widespread chaos and the security situation, Mr Chumpol said. He said 19 countries had warned their people to avoid visiting Thailand at this time. "The number of tourists has dropped considerably," the minister said. "The government was hoping that tourism in the South would see a boost but it is now more difficult as foreigners think that the unrest is occurring nationwide." On the measures to revive the tourism sector after the political situation stabilises, he said the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) had prepared plans to stimulate tourism in the third and fourth quarters of this year. When the yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters seized airports in late 2008, the TAT was able to raise the tourist arrivals from 10 million to 14 million that year after it was over, the minister said. "The government hopes this year's tourist arrivals will reach the target with the time remaining," he said. Mr Chumpol refused to comment on whether the government would last until the end of this year.
