Only in Thailand do people freeze to death when temperature drop under 16 degres.
Over here it is under 15 degree most of the time, and nobody die...

We are made to survive the cold better-

Just as they can survive heat better-

Used to always amaze me to see workers in the rice fields toil in 40 degree heat in long shirts and pants and some even wearing Baraclavas to keep their face from tanning too much-

I would need 3-4 litres of water to walk cows for a few hours in the open and hide in the shade a couple more-

Where as they would get by on just a litre-

There is an "ICE BAR" on walking street now- made out of ice- serves VoBKa - (its below freezing)

A westerner would die in maybe - 60-80 minutes depending on body fat

(were they naked)

A thai freaks quick- and is a mess after 10 minutes- dead in 40 I reckon-

They offer coats to wear- *as you go in)

But I took girls there and said "if you last 15 minutes " (no coat) you get 1000 baht-

If you dont you still get 1000 baht but I get to plug your arse as well-

Won everytime!

It's all relative, and one's body develops tolerances to what it's used to in terms of heat and cold. I grew up mostly in the Northeast and Midwest US, I've experienced -40 F. (and that's not with wind chill), but 6 years living in Thailand definitely lowered my tolerance for cold and raised my tolerance for heat and humidity. In Wisconsin, after 3 weeks of below 0 F. temps, on the day that it "shoots up" to 25 F. there are always some people walking around in shorts.

Where I live in the US it rarely gets much above 20 C. and often gets down to the single digits; while it's not gonna kill me, it is very uncomfortable and I never stop complaining about it, haha, everyone thinks I'm nuts...

And don't forget the annual New Year's Day swim of the Polar Bear Club in Lake Michigan at Bradford Beach, regardless of how cold it is. There's supposed to be a high temperature of 2 degrees Fahrenheit this Sunday, and snowing. Should be a big turnout, of spectators mostly, but also some swimmers. One way to cure that NYE hangover. And we think tourists that swim at Pattaya Beach are crazy!

Report from The Nation dated 5 February 2012 :-

Capital should be moved to Northeast, top scientist says
===========================================

Dr Art-Ong Jumsai na Ayudhya, a former scientist at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), has called for the relocation of Thailand's capital to the Northeast.

Speaking at a seminar on climate change, natural disasters, and the future of Thailand, Art-ong said Bangkok is sinking every year because of the rising sea level.

Citing the rising amount of rainfall and the rising dam water level in 2010 and 2011, he said the trend will worsen in 2012 and in coming years, so authorities have to increase efficiency in draining the excess water into the sea.

Regarding the capital, he said, far-sighted leaders should consider relocating out of Bangkok, which has been the country's capital for more than 200 years, to a higher ground such as one of the 16 northeastern provinces.

Relocation of the capital will take at least 20 years and a brand-new capital should be built as Bangkok will face difficulties in managing excess water in the next seven or eight years.

Bangkokians should pack and flee if floodwaters reach Ayutthaya's Wang Noi: Plodprasop
=========================================================

Science Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi Monday advised Bangkokians to start packing their belongings and getting prepared to flee if upstream floodwaters have reached Wang Noi district of Ayutthaya.

He gave the advice while answering a senator's question about the government's flood-prevention measures.

Plodprasop said Thailand was expected to be hit by heavy rains and at least three tropical storms, expecting to generate some 50 to 60 billion cubic metres of floodwaters.

He said forests and dams would absorb most of waters and would leave about 15 billion cubic metres to be handled by flood-retention areas prepared by the government.

He said about 10 billion cubit metres of floodwaters would have to be drained through main rivers, like Tha Chin, Chao Phraya and Bang Pakong.

So, if the deluge of remaining floodwaters could not be drained via rivers and reach Wang Noi, Bangkok would be flooded.

... Thai floodwater management... to paraphrase a quote I read recently, maybe on this forum somewhere: "Thais plan; the gods laugh."

... this next monsoon will be a showcase for the Thai nation... people all over the world (tourists, investors, multinational export manfacturers) and Thais will be watching.
