Corruption ruined the airport, Thais tell poll

The Suan Dusit Poll has found that Thais blame corruption more than any other cause for the mess at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Exactly 48 per cent of those polled in the past three days said "rampant corruption" was responsible for the host of problems that have plagued Suvarnabhumi since it began commercial operations in September.
Nearly one in four persons - 24.5 per cent - said that the damages and ongoing repairs at Suvarnabhumi would tarnish the country's reputation in the eyes of foreigners, and 16.5 per cent said they felt unsafe in using the airport.
Problems at Suvarnabhumi international airport surfaced even before its opening last September and the most serious one, found recently, is the case of runway and taxiway cracks. Repairs are under way.
Some low-cost airlines have expressed their willingness to switch their operations at the former Don Muang International Airport, closed since the opening of Suvarnabhumi, and currently under its own runway refurbishment by its only tenant, the Air Force.
According to the poll, 50.5 per cent of the respondents said the graft investigation must be speeded up and that those who have participated in corrupt activities punished.
Another 37 per cent said airport repairs must be carried out quickly, and nearly 8 per cent said problems must be solved at the root cause and without political intervention.

Strange never happened to me... but then again I don't have a stupid tourist look... 555!
I remember one time that when we arrived at my apartment the meter showed 91 baht and I paid with a 100 baht bill.
'No have change' the driver replied. I told him I was going to take a nap and asked him to wake me up if the meter had reached 101 baht.
I never saw any taxi driver returning change so quick.
Actually, you can't blame them. People like PL69 create taxi drivers like that... just stand up to them!

I am puzzled by this.
Can someone tell me why I have to pay for more than what was shown on the meter ?

More and more? I can't remember a time when they (75% of them) didn't try these little games on anyone they thought they would fall for it. For them, it's a real mental accomplishment to come up with such a lame con.

Would you consider me to be "new" to Thailand ?
Two reasons:
1. The fact theat they obviously see you as a soft mark, whereas I can honestly say this has never happened to me in the time we have had metered taxis.
2. That you even seem amazed that they do try this on with you, when you obviously do come across as so green.
Give them what is on the meter and open the door to leave....really rather simple...but then again......

Why dont you just pay & go?
No need to argue, or even ask the price, give the driver the price indicated by the meter and leave the taxi...no problem.
Dont give those crooks time to open their mouth, hand the money and say a loud goodbye!
Of course if you go around with only crisp 1000 bahts notes you might have trouble getting your change from taxis LOL. This is what all those 10 bahts coins some of you leave around as "tips" are for : pay the exact fare to taxi

If the driver gives you a hard time, pay him the fare shown on the meter only and walk back against the traffic. It isn't likely he will back up and chase you down over a scam that didn't work.
I always have small bills to pay taxis and will sometimes let them keep the coins as a tip. Nothing more.

Its not the number to times that you come to LOS, it is the way you act once you get here...
I pay the metered rate (with excpetion of the 50 Bt surcharge from the Airport and tolls as required) and if the driver tries to object I pretend not to understand and leave.

I've never had a problem with taxi drivers asking for more than what the meter said. Them trying to negotiate a ridiculous flat rate before driving off, however, I have experienced. Usually happens in the touristy spots.
I still get a taxi from depatures every time I arrive at Bangkok airport; the taxi drivers dropping off passengers are more than happy to drive you - using the meter. (And they also don't charge the 50 Baht extra.) Last one that drove me complained that for them the new airport really sucks, since it is far, and not as easy as it used to be to pick up a passenger there.
