Just got this....
HONG KONG (AP) - Hong Kong reported a record 12 deaths in a single day from the SARS virus Saturday, while Singapore's leader warned that the outbreak could become the worst economic crisis his city-state has ever faced....
It is part of a newservice message that I have subscribed to.

Hey chaps,
as promised, here I give you the latest information on how they handle it ...
Just returned to Peking/Beijing (!!!) after a trip I started last Thursday.
The Flight TG 615 Beijing-Bangkok was nearly empty, about 12 passengers. The whole Beijing Airport looked deserted!
They handed out face-masks before arrival and parked the plane somewhat remotely in a position where a bus picked up the pax. Then followed a kind of medical check in the charming thai-way: Fever check (negative), brief chat with a GP (no caughng - fine).
There were no instructions to wear the mask all the time !!!
In Bangkok, the bars, the hotels, streets, etc. not many masks to be seen. No checks. (Gave the info to the hotel, that i had arrived from Beijing, though!)
On return today, no problem either, but the plane had more passengers though certainly less than normal.
Go ahaed, everybody, there is no problem as far as the authorities are concerned!
(Had a bloody good time, believe me!)

i'm curious, did the SARS situation have an affect on the ST/LT rates, girls attitude/service, hotel rates/services, etc...?

Although a couple of weeks out of date this e-mail is doing the rounds in HK and Ý(for me) puts a more pragmatic Ýview across

There is a dangerous virus spreading through Hong Kong. It is NOT atypical pneumonia. It is panic.

All outbreaks of any high-profile pathogen or disease (cf the UK's Mad Cow disease) have two major effects. A tiny proportion of people are hit by the disease itself. A large number of people, organizations and entire industry sectors are hit by the panic that accompanies it.

Yes, you should be careful and take all precautions as advised by your medical advisor, but no, you don't have to panic and flee Hong Kong.
1. You don't have to stay at home. At the time of writing (first week of April, 2003), more than 99.999% of people in Hong Kong are completely free of the SARS virus.

2. An increase in numbers doesn't mean people in every apartment block have it. The virus's growth pattern shows a tendency to remain tightly clustered - for example in the Prince of Wales Hospital and Amoy Gardens.

3. Ninety-nine people a day die of flu every day in the United States alone. Of these 99, about 30 die of acute respiratory problems. In Hong Kong, 16 people have died over a month.

4. In any large city of this size, there are hundreds of Ýpneumonia sufferers at any time, of which several dozen have some
form of atypical Ýpneumonia.

5. Yes, the virus does mutate. But this doesn't necessarily mean it continually gets more virulent. Scientists note that as SARS spreads, it is significantly weakening from carrier to carrier.

6. The media may call it a killer virus, but the survival rate among those hit in these clusters is 96%.

7. Yes, we all care about our children, but very few kids get it Ý- careful examination of lists confirms that victims tend to be elderly people with a direct physical link to the clusters.

8. Contaminated places get clean by themselves. The virus dies without a carrier. Some scientists estimate its life as three hours,
others say a little longer, but all agree it cannot hibernate. In other words, you can even check into the Metropole Hotel floor 9
without fear.

9. The virus is believed to die when the air temperature reaches 27 degrees C. One hot Hong Kong day could fry all traces of it on exposed surfaces.

10. You can keep your air conditioner on in the office. Ward 8B in the Prince of Wales Hospital shares an air conditioning system with the infected Ward 8A. But there was not a single infection in 8B.

11. Many people assume the "growth model" of the virus will Ýfollow sci-fi movie scenarios. Evidence suggests it is more likely to
follow the Guangzhou experience, where it spreads for a few weeks and then started to contract.

12. The flood of panicky emails from a variety of people, including doctors who should know better, is not helpful. One email doing the rounds is instructing people not to exercise, for example. Panic Ýcreates muddleheadedness. Consider the facts above. Hong Kong is our Ýhome.

Im not qualified to confirm all the above, however IMHO the guy has a point

Asian Man,
sorry, can't really comment on that one, as my last stay before the one of this weekend was 5 years ago ...
Impresion though, that some bars in Patpong were nearly deserted, having a split effect: More need to find someone to take the BG out (means lower price) but fewer chance to be taken out (so get away with as much as you can get) ... I settled for about what I paid 5 years ago and that is always good, I think.
The hotel and restaurants complaining about few tourists, but again no big bargaining chance.
++
As for the other post above: My dear chap, 2 high ranking party officials just lost their jobs in Beijing - do you think the chinese Comunist Party just ends promising careers due to panic ? no, sir, sorry, that's not the way they do it! They tried to play it down and were stopped by people who know their job and who saw the victims. Don't be too sure about anybody who wants to tell you it's all panic!

Peter:
I agree. I don't think it's all panic and infact, my relatives in both Hong Kong and Singapore would probably wish it was just panic.

And I"m not saying to go over board either. I think that SARS is a real problem that they are only now getting their hands around.

Hi Badger,

couldn't agree more with you about panic and media hype being blown out of proportion right now.

Just some more points:

- The speed with which SARS infects new victims will slow down dramatically as soon as more and more people will become immune.

- Most of the masks used in Hongkong and elsewhere are pretty useless - you would need rather expensive and really tight masks plus probably also sealed glasses to protect yourself reliably.

- According to latest news, the SARS death rate is not 4% but rather around 18%. Before, they had simply devided the number of casualties by the total number of infected persons and got a rate of 4%. But this is a misleading underestimation when a disease is in it's early stage and still growing on a geometrical path. ÝOne may only take the persons into account where it's clear that they either survived and recovered or died because of SARS, and must not count freshly infected patients where the outcome is still unclear...

- It has been shown that SARS was carried into Toronto and Hongkong by just a single person. The disease is rather infectous and can spread very quickly in it's initial state.

So there's both good and bad news. SARS is not a major threat right now in comparison to other more common diseases (or other general risks), but it has to be taken seriously and all efforts need to be taken to keep it from spreading.

Fritz,
this is in my eyes a very good assesment and
Badger,
I certainly did not mean to blow the horn of the wets, smoking one cigarette after the other while worrying about the SARS risks !
- Living in Beijing I just was impressed a bit by the firing of 2 party hotshots. With second thought the reason for them being put out of office is not their mishandling of SARS, but their wrong media-policy.
- many other risks are higher, I agree, mentioned smoking already, also crossing a street, driving a motorbike and going to bed (NOTE: Most people die there!).
- precautions can be taken like avoiding people who sneeze, blow and caugh. If they have a red head don't worry immediately, may be too much drink and not only fever, haha.
