Ordinary holiday makers like to let their hair down and enjoy themselves not just the sex-tourists. Thaidup I don't think you know the holiday business very well? Try and go to Spain where you will see all age groups and all classes having a good time till the wee small hours!
Herman My post above about keeping the riff raff out was a joke, but it I have to explain it..Oh well. The joke was to point out the obvious incorrect radio reporting that was a day late and a dollar short, just like many of your links.
The ongoing discussion that you have listed checked on Jan 17th lists a last post date of Dec. 30th. Maybe ABC is getting their field reporting from Thaivisa.com

One 18 year old girl, a few weeks ago was among a group of us who went to Morgan in RCA. I remember her showing a piece of paper to the guys asking for ID. Inside I asked her how she managed to get inside? What had she shown them? She showed it to me: a photocopy of the ID of her sister!! They do accept photocopies of IDs

I personally think that rising incomes and urban prosperity combined with a general lack of parental discipline are more to blame than late closing hours...
Thailand has obviously changed very rapidly during the past 20 years - at least the big cities have. One consequence is that quite a wide generation gap seems to have opened up between today's youngsters and their parents. I think this is akin to what happened in the West in the 60s, though I would guess the gap isn't quite as wide as that.
A failed culture? Well, it may be that Thai Buddhist culture is going down the drain the same way Western Christian culture did in the last century. If so, I hope it doesn't do so quite so completely, because imho an awful lot of Western baby disappeared down the plughole along with the Western bathwater. At any event, this is for the Thais to sort out - it's their culture, not ours. That said, I think at least some of us choose to live here or visit often because we rather like Thailand the way it is. The appeal isn't solely the f_cks-to-bucks ratio.

Since the PM has seen the potential error that would be made in reducing closing hours, he has reprimanded the Interior Minister and this will be left forgotten like some leftovers left in the back of the refrigerator. This is all contained in the Thai subtleties of the press releases. So why debate on I think will not happen anytime soon.
Having said that, IMHO there will be no effect on tourism, since there will be no changes.

Whatever the bad reaction to Thaksin's proposals, and his good sense in aborting them, they appear positively modest compared with the latest EU proposal from Ireland that the European Union ban P4P.
