In fact I visited the particular individual at Siemens who was in charge of supervising safety on the entire Skytrain system last year and he walked me through the entire procedure. He sure looked in charge to me.
If you think my comments are racist then you would not like me to share his thoughts on Thai safety standards. Suffice to say that if he was not there to point out safety procedures to his Thai staff on a daily basis then the system would be 'less safe' to say the least.
Is that a reasonable enough example for you?
Have you ever followed a Thai around a park while riding on a bicycle? I suggest you try it. I could maintain a straighter line after downing 15 Heinekens wearing a blindfold, riding backwards.
Visit the Lighthouse Club once in a while and ask a few engineers and quantity surveyors to describe a few 'standard' Thai safety procedures.
Mate this ain't racism I'm talking about, it is fact based on actual accounts. I love Thais but they are inherently careless. Just like I love the Finns. Great people, but massive pissheads. Of course I am going to generalise, isn't that what gives different cultures their character????
This discussion originated on the subject of the subway accident. Therefore I made my comment. You turned it into a slagging match fella. If we were discussing Thai food I would have said that Thais have some of the most original and delicious food in the world.
What did you expect me to say? The accident was caused by human error much the same as in any other country? No, because most cultures do not allow a train to blindly roll down a tunnel and crash into another train full of people beacuse SOME BLOKE ON THE RADIO TOLD HIM IT WAS OK!!!!!!!!

A typical construction site:

Europe Thailand

Safety boots Flip flops
Safety harness Thin rope
Safety hat Beanie
Safety glasses Squinting through one eye

No. That is not a reasonable enough example - because it is the nature of expat experts to always criticise the locals. That is the way they up their importance. I have heard Indian Textile Technologists criticising British and U.S. workers.

I have been to many parts of Thailand during my 11 years stay here and everywhere I have seen people cycling perfectly. Your experience in a park in Bangkok could be because it is a city-dweller who was learning how to cycle.

And I suppose the recent accident on the Japanese Shin Kasen Line was NOT human error ?
And I suppose the 3 accidents last year near Paddington station in the U.K. were not due to human error ?
And the accidents on Amtrak in the U.S. ?
etc. ?

I suppose you have never visited the site for the new airport ?
And maybe you have never visited the Sub-Way site when it was under construction ?
If you had you would know that your statement above is totally out-dated.

I would say that most errors and accidents are the result of human error. Sometimes that human error has the assistance of some kind of system failure - however most disasters then followup by compounding effect with human error.

The ventilation failed in the Mont Blanc tunnel fire and the controlroom started pumping in air that fed the fire. the Longford gas plant fire started at a piece of equipment that the the day shift maintenace manager had been putting out-of-service as defective and the night-shift kept putting back in to service.

The Thai rail accident looks like a classic communications cock-up. "I'll hold the spike and you take the sledge hammer and when I nod my head you hit it as hard as you can. "

Someone thought the traction engine was hooked onto the train and did not confirm this. This is what happens when you try to rush a complicated job. Things gets worse.

I heard daily report from friends working on the subway while under construction. One resulting in a worker being buried after he got tanked and decided to sleep it off on a sand pile just prior to delivery of a new load.
I can't be bothered trying to argue with you anymore. If you think Thais safety standards are the equal of Europe/Australia/US etc. then so be it. I disagree.

Kenneth,
Our discussion was NOT about Thai safety standards - BUT about your GENERALISATIONS about all Thais - please read my earlier post which is copied below :-

Kenneth,
If you had bothered to read without your RACIST tinted glasses you will see that I made my point WITH FACTS right at the beginning of this Thread ( on page 2 ).
My point was that even if the accident was due to human failure you should not make generalised statements like :-
- Most Thais cannot even ride a Bicycle properly.
- Thais do EVERYTHING in a half-arsed manner.
- Most Thais do not want to ride on the Sub-Way.
- etc.
When I pointed out to you that the Sky-Train ( run by Thais ) transfering thousands of passengers per day has been running for nearly 5 years now without any major problem - you gave the credit for that to the German Engineers ( who incidentally are not running that System ).
Sure the culture and resultant way of doing things in this country are not the most desirable to Western eyes - BUT that does not merit the generalisations you made ( given above ).
In fact you will find it extremely difficult to cite more than one or two cases where you can say that things were done in a half-arsed manner.

Arramsey. Do you argue with yourself when you're alone?

Kenneth,
Arguing with myself would at least be enlightening and educative - UNLIKE arguing with someone who has absolutely no intellectual content and who makes categorical statements based on one or two observations.

Aren't you fortunate that you are such an interesting, well informed and experienced individual. And isn't it also fortunate that there is a forum such as this where so many people can benefit from your pearls of wisdom. Would you like to drop your pants so that I can kiss your arse?
So please explain why someone as enlightened and educated as your good self need to resort to abuse and name calling? I see that you are yet to responde to this question.

You have established that you are a RACIST right ? I call you a RACIST.
Any more questions ?

11 years in this country and you have learnt nothing. This makes you either stupid or ignorant. Which is it?
