Quote: from China Sailor on 5:29 am on Oct. 26, 2005 That being said, there is a question of how much control Beijing has over the Western Provences these days. It seems that a lot of the local village leaders have been setting up thier own fiefdoms and they really do not care about a worldwide pandemic as long as they do not get sick...
...yes, and couple that with an educational level that can't even fathom what they are dealing with, and certainly don't care if the fowl is foul, as long as it gets sold outside of their villages - and what do you get? Essentially, I'm sure the central gov't wants to keep the country (and the economy) healthy, but also reacts in typical fashion by dealing only reactively to the WHO's threats and influence, with absolutely no long-term vision, or care for a global picture. Hard to have that with a sheep herder's background, when it comes to most of their 'leaders'

"the WHO's threats and influence" , Duck I think that the first time i've agreed with you. However, "with absolutely no long-term vision, or care for a global picture. Hard to have that with a sheep herder's background, when it comes to most of their 'leaders'" Now that really is an unpleasant way to talk about your adopted country's 'leaders', I think I might just send that on to the FBI. Anyway, with just about every media source in the world continually pumping out updates on bird flu thank goodness you boys are posting updates on here. Interestingly enough the recently reconstituted 1918 virus showed that it was not a bird-human flu combination. You'd think the media would be interested in reporting that but the only thing i've found is comments from a scientist saying that it makes H5N1 even more dangerous because it only has to mutate with another type of bird flu (such as the H3N2 virus found in turkeys in the US this year) that can be easily transmitted too and then between humnans to wipe us all out. http://liam.gnn.tv/blogs/10014/Bird_Flu_Reality_or_Manipulation_Biodefense_and_Pandemic_and_Vaccine_and_Drug_Development_Act_of_2005 Anyway for all those who's nerves aren't already shot to pieces a more lighthearted look at our impending deaths. http://www.boingboing.net/2005/10/17/daily_show_on_bird_f.html

Duck, It appears that CNN.com has decided to include China in one of its reports: http://edition.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/conditions/10/26/birdflu.main/index.html Could it be that they read this forum?? As for the Chinese Leadership the comment about a 'sheep herders' background may have applied 20 years ago but if you check the current 'Who’s Who' of Chinese Leadership you will see that since Mao died they have been carefully groomed for their positions. Many hold advanced degrees from the best Universities in the world. Now compare that to the current US leadership and tell me what the difference is... BL, Just goes to prove --> Armageddon's comin' to a theartre near you!

Who Owns the Rights on Tamiflu: Rumsfeld To Profit From Bird Flu Hoax By Dr. Joseph Mercola October 26, 2005 mercola.com We bring to the attention of Global Research readers this important cmmentary by Dr.Joseph Mercola. The fundamnetal issue is who owns the intellectual property rights over Tamiflu. The media reports suggest that the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche will make billions. While the drug is produced by Roche, it was developed by Gilead Sciences Inc.which owns the intellectual property rights. Gilead, which has maintained a low profile, has outsourced the production to Roche. Donald Rumsfeld was appointed Chairman of Gilead Sciences, Inc. in 1997, a position which he held in the years prior to becoming Secretary of Defense.in the Bush adminstration. Rumsfeld had been on the Board of Directors from the establishment of Gilead in 1987. As confirmed in a company press statement in 1997, Donald H. Rumsfeld assumed the position of Chairman, of GILEAD: : "Gilead is fortunate to have had Don Rumsfeld as a stalwart board member since the company's earliest days, and we are very pleased that he has accepted the Chairmanship," Dr. Riordan said. "He has played an important role in helping to build and steer the company. His broad experience in leadership positions in both industry and government will serve us well as Gilead continues to build its commercial presence." According to company statement: Gilead Science Inc "has been active in the development of inhibitors for the potential treatment and prevention of viral influenza and protease inhibitors for the potential treatment of HIV" "The Company's research and development efforts encompass three interrelated programs: small molecule antivirals, cardiovascular therapeutics and genetic code blockers for cancer and other diseases. Gilead's expertise in each of these areas has also resulted in the discovery and development of non-nucleotide product candidates, including neuraminidase inhibitors for the potential treatment and prevention of viral influenza and protease inhibitors for the potential treatment of HIV" Also find below an article published in the SF Chronicle, which points to the relationship between GILEAD and Roche in relation to the Rights over Tami Flu. Michel Chossudovsky, Global Research, 26 Oct 2005 Avian FluFinally, the pieces of the puzzle start to add up. Not long ago, President Bush sought to instill panic in this country by telling us a minimum of 200,000 people will die from the avian flu pandemic, but it could be as bad as 2 million deaths in this country alone. This hoax is then used to justify the immediate purchase of 80 million doses of Tamiflu, a worthless drug that in no way shape or form treats the avian flu, but only decreases the amount of days one is sick and can actually contribute to the virus having more lethal mutations. So the U.S. placed an order for 20 million doses of this worthless drug at a price of $100 per dose. That comes to a staggering $2 billion. We are being told that Roche manufactures Tamiflu and, in a recent New York Times article, they were battling whether or not they would allow generic drug companies to help increase their production. But if you dig further you will find that a drug was actually developed by a company called Gilead that 10 years ago gave Roche the exclusive rights to market and sell Tamiflu. Ahh, The Plot Thickens... If you read the link below from Gilead, you'll discover Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was made the chairman of Gilead in 1997. Since Rumsfeld holds major portions of stock in Gilead, he will handsomely profit from the scare tactics of the government that is being used to justify the purchase of $2 billion of Tamiflu.

I should have been more accurate, in that respect -- I was not referring to the top levels of the Chinese gov't. These folks all read really well on a resumé, but unfortunately, while they certainly are the ones setting policy, they are not the ones executing and enforcing those policies. Provincial and regional leaders, the ones expected to follow policy, are the ones I was referencing, and you will find that these 'leaders'' backgrounds are far more mundane...

Daffy, How many provincial and regional chinese leaders do you know? It is interesting to note that this country that has sheep herders filling so many of it's govermental roles, this country that managed to unite itself over 2000 years ago (something the EU can't even manage today) actually produced 2.8 million graduates last year.

I attended a speech yesterday in NYC by Donald Tsang, chief executive of Hong Kong. He said that after the SARS experience, HK is gearing up to the max for any potential outbreak of bird flu. Of course, he's not going to say anything alarming in front of an audience of U.S. business people and HK ex-pats, but he wasn't taking the matter lightly. He got more serious and stumbled more when talking about bird flu than at any other time during the Q&A session.

Hey madfrog, If that is true then why don't you go to LOS and start a chicken farm. FYI, this flu strain has been knocking around Asia since 1998, long before the introduction of Tamiflu. As with any flu it will take hold and eventually begin to spread. Any way, as the Japanese have noted, Tamiflu seems to be ineffective in the latest cases of H5N1 they have been treating (yes, Avain Flu has been in Japan for about two months)...
