Pornchai refutes rumours of coup

Gen Pornchai Kranlert, assistant army chief, insisted yesterday that his former classmates at the pre-cadet school will not stage a coup d'etat to secure the power of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a member of the group.
''It's just a rumour. I'd like to ask reporters not to believe rumours because there are a lot of them going around now,'' said Gen Pornchai who is tipped to be the next army commander-in-chief.
He insisted he and other officers from Class 10 at the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School strictly obeyed orders from their superiors and had no conflicts with Class 6 officers led by army chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin.
''The army chief loves us and has never pressured us. So I would like to confirm that Class 10 officers will not stage a coup,'' Gen Pornchai said.
A unit of soldiers from the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Division had moved out of the army headquarters and returned to the division in Kiakkai because its mission at the headquarters ended on Feb 27.
However, an army source said yesterday that Gen Sonthi had ordered 120 soldiers from the First Special Warfare Division in Lop Buri province to secure the army headquarters in place of the anti-aircraft artillery force that returned to Kiakkai.
The source said Gen Sonthi is now guarded by 25 special warfare soldiers instead of just 12 previously. Gen Sonthi yesterday denied a report that he had advised Mr Thaksin to resign during their lunch at Government House on Tuesday.
Weng Tochirakarn, chairman of the Democracy Confederation, said yesterday that reports about a secret meeting of Class 10 officers and movements of forces under their command suggested the possibility of a coup d'etat. A military coup would ruin Thai democracy, he said.
''Our present democratic rule has been long developed. If a military force is used to solve political problems, it means we are backtracking,'' Dr Weng said.
He urged Mr Thaksin to stay away from politics for a while and ensure constitutional changes that will allow the people to impeach corrupt politicians. He also demanded a consensus on every issue of national interest.

What is the good of becoming the Prime Minister of ones country if you cannot make billions from it.
Like the traffic policeman, his wages are only 100k baht or so a month. So as the leader of the nation and the person with the ultimate responsibility and weight on his shoulders, he deserves to reap the benifits however they may come.
I would. How many of you would not do the same.
I do not see you all bitching about GWB or his gun slinging pal Cheney who have become super rich since they have become good public officials.

This is the Shinawatra that emigrated to the US. A US Immigration official misspelled his name upon entry, became known as Sinatra. Apparently became Chairman of the Boards before passing. Survived by 3 children.

It's a beautiful Friday morning here in Bangkok, wake up, have a shag and read the newspapers "The Nation" and "Bangkok Post" to find out what happened yesterday with the political situation. Headlines:
The Nation: "Democratic Leaders Attacked in Chiang Mai"
Bangkok Post: "Protest shuts newspaper... Angry mob blockades Kom Chad Luek office"
Reading both papers, it is like these are two different counties. One paper talks about a country that has a tyrant as a ruler, the other talks about a country with a a renegade lynch-mob out for the head of the leader, who has done nothing but good for this country.
Although one newspaper is pro-Taksin and the other is anti-Taksin, and they make no bones about it. At least in Amereka, liberal media try to "pretend" they are impartial. Same with the conservatives.
Talking to Thais, they are either adamently pro-Taksin or fervently anti-Taksin. The pro-Taksin people think the anti-Taksin folks are selfish, and the anti-Taksin people think the pro-Taksin folks are stupid. No respect of either side here. (Maybe same-same Amereka, I've yet to meet someone who criticizes Bush policies without eventually dismissing him as 'stupid').
Anyway, those are my thoughts for today... enjoy your newspapers!

Personally, I feel that Thaksin (big picture wise) has done quite some some good for Thailand, in his efforts to put Thailand 'on the map', so to speak.
Nevertheless, he screwed up when it came to the essential details of being a political leader - knowing how to deal not only with insurgents in the South, but more than that, talking to the media regarding clear mistakes -- claiming the insurgents in the South died because they were weakened by Ramadam; etc...
Lastly, what appears to be his undoing was pure and simple greed - while the sale of Shin Corp to eliminate the appearance of conflict of interest was a good move, and would have worked, if only he hadn't gotten greedy and used the system to make the sale entirely tax free. He could at least have given the appearance of paying a hefty sum in taxes (say, 10 billion), only to receive tax refunds a year later of several payments totalling 8-9 billion or so, quietly.
Does any of this mean he should be kicked out, considering (honestly) that what he has done is no different than any other politicians', especially when it comes to that area in the world?
