Bangkok hit with floods
===================
Various spots of the eastern Bangkok had been submerged prompting Royal Irrigation Department chief to urged officials to keep drain into the Bang Pakong River and the Gulf of Thailand.

Samart Chokkanapitak said Thursday that although some areas would suffer blockage floods, the newly opened Suvarnabhumi Airport would not be affected. Following the airport's opening, the department would soon excavate 17 canals in the eastern Bangkok to increase its water-draining ability.

Samart also insisted the high sea tides and the northern floodwater passing through Chao Phraya River at 2,423 cubic metres per second would not submerge Bangkok. "The only factor that can cause flooding is heavy rainfall," he said.

Bangkok's Srinakharin, Pattanakarn and Ramkhamhaeng roads were kneedeep in water after Wednesday night's heavy downpours.

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin, who yesterday morning inspected the routes said officials worked had hard to drain floodwaters out of the areas and the situation should be back to normal by late afternoon Friday 29 September 2006.

Major floods in N Bangkok
=====================

The governor of Nonthaburi province declared an official state of emergency this morning when heavy flooding hit thousands of homes and a major tourist attraction.

Governor Pranai Suwannarat said he would immediately start distributing 50 million baht worth of emergency aid on the provincial level, with another five million available from the emergency funds of each district.

The Chao Phraya burst its banks yesterday, as embankments were unable to hold floods from the North, combined with heavy rain in the Bangkok area.

The governor's office said "several thousand" homes were flooded along the river.

Also under water was Koh Kred, a major tourist attraction. The island has an ancient-style Mon village called Kwarn Ar-marn, which produces pottery.

The latest weather forecast called for widespread thundershowers in the Bangkok region Friday and into the weekend, with heavy rain expected at times.

In addition to the runoff from the North and the climax of the rainy season, Bangkok also must contend with high tides from the Gulf of Thailand, which can back up the Chao Phraya in the Bangkok region.

Heavy storms likely in Northeast
=========================

Northeast Thailand is expected to be hit hard by the edge of Typhoon Xangsane, with strong winds and heavy rain likely for the next four to five days.

The Meteorological Department said this afternoon that the storm was expected to hit central Vietnam in the region of Dan Nang on Sunday, and move east.

While the typhoon will lose some power, the big storm's winds - 165kph at the centre this afternoon in the South China Sea - will reach far to the East, striking the Ubon Ratchathani region in particular.

The current forecast said that, "People in northeastern Thailand should beware of heavy rainfall, gusty winds and flash flood during 1-4 October" - Sunday through Wednesday.

"Heavy to very heavy rain and gusty winds are expected in the (Northeast) areas," said the bulletin.

Just wondering how the lower Sukhumvit Rd area fares when Bangkok is affected by flooding. I'm arriving there on the 10th of October and have heard flooding may occur around that time. Can anyone provide more info on this subject? Thanks in advance.

Bangkok flood alert for Tuesday 10 October 2006
====================================

High tides peak next Tuesday, and authorities have set up a special number for flood information, Thailand's disaster response chief said.

The Bangkok Flood Hotline number is 1784, where operators can provide the latest situation report.

Mr Anucha warned that Bang Ban district of Ayutthaya province and six districts comprising eastern Bangkok remain at risk for floods as high tides will peak again October 10.

Both Ayutthaya and Bangkok are at risk of flooding if new downpours occur, compounding the challenges already faced by overtaxed water drainage systems, the disaster response chief said.

The Department has been working closely with provincial authorities to bring relief and assistance to those affected, he said. The Department is keeping the Flood Telephone Hotline 1784 manned around the clock for up-to-date flood information.

Typhoon Xangsane left a trail of damage in 36 provinces, inflicting over 200 million baht (more than $5 million) in damage, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

Director-General Anucha Mokhaves said the typhoon brought about downpours causing swift rises in major rivers. To date, residents in 36 provinces were affected, while another 20 provinces remain under water.

Over 1.3 million people in some 360,000 households were affected, and 22 persons died.

More rain coming, Ayutthaya flooded
===========================

The Meteorological Department warned this afternoon that heavy rain is expected in many regions in the next few days, and issued flood warnings for low-lying areas.

But the Department said the situation was starting to ease. There should be less rain in the North and Northeast, effective immediately, while nights are beginning to grow cooler - a sign that winter and the dry season are approaching.

The central and eastern regions will continue to face heavy rains through the weekend, but after that the situation should imporove.

Rains will shift further South next week, with heavy downpours likely in the upper Gulf area beginning on Monday. Regions along the Andaman coast will face continuous, heavy rain next week.

The flood situation in Ayutthaya Province is still in a critical condition, and many ancient sites there have already been submerged. Many units are working together to aid people in 445 villages of 91 tambons in Ayutthaya.

The first floor of the city's main Nasiruddin mosque is flooded, and prayers have been moved to the second floor.

At the same time, Boonkanyawat Temple in Bang Ban District has been inundated for over a week, and monks there are not able to enter the temple to inspect the damage. All Buddhist statues in the temple are still underwater.
