Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 30 April 2007 :-
Alcohol bill 'not meant to ruin tourism'
===========================

Hotels and restaurants located near schools and temples will not be banned from selling liquor under the new alcohol control bill being drafted.

The National Legislative Assembly's special committee, which is drafting the bill, held its second public hearing yesterday to sound out opinions from hoteliers, restaurant owners and tourism business operators.

Some of the representatives of these businesses expressed concern about the possible ban on alcohol sales in the vicinity of temples and schools because many hotels are located close to temples in some major provinces, including Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya.

In response, Tuang Anthachai, the committee spokesman, said the bill would only ban alcohol sales within school and temple compounds as it was not designed to ruin tourism-related businesses as feared.

The bill was only aimed at encouraging drinkers to give up drinking, he said.

The participants also opposed a plan to impose an alcohol advertisement ban concerning brand logos on tableware in hotels and restaurants.

They said the total value of the tableware bearing such logos in these places was estimated at about five billion baht.

They also complained that the planned liquor advertisement ban would reduce their competitiveness against their counterparts in neighbouring countries.

Public Health Minister Mongkol na Songkhla, as head of the special committee, promised his panel would seriously look into the complaints.

However, the committee dismissed a request to let business operators implement self-censorship instead.

Boys start drinking at 11, girls at 15 - Road accidents killing 4,000 teenagers a year
===============================================================

Thai boys start drinking as early as 11 years old, and girls as young as 15, a study by Thai Health Promotion Foundation has found.

Suriyadev Tripati, chief of the foundation's youth and children's health division, said road accidents were the most frequent cause of deaths among Thai teenagers last year.

On average, road accidents kill about 4,000 teenagers annually, or 11 people each day.

About 40% of those accidents were related to drinking, said Dr Suriyadev.

A study found male youths take their first drink as early as 11 years old, while female teenagers start drinking at 15.

One million male teenagers aged between 11 and 19 drink compared to about 200,000 female teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19.
