Daffy,

You know MTK won't be satisfied until you reanact the incident to prove your theory.

Body tearing off from head is within the realm of possibility -- if the body had been hanging for sufficiently long from the rope. The rope would slowly tear into the skin and once the skin ruptures and the body starts bleeding it would be another short while before the skin -- and muscles -- altogether tear all around leaving only the spine holding head and body together. Then, given the weight of the body, the joint holding it to the skull could come unstuck causing the body to fall off. Then the head too should fall off. It cannot be hanging on to the noose.

Let's consider that the guy draped a long polybag over his head, so that it went down his neck, then slipped the noose round the neck. In this scenario there was a good chance that the hanging would fail. The momentum imparted by the jump could have caused the noose to slip right up his polybag covered neck and face, letting him fall (alive) into the river. Let's assume it succeeded and broke his neck.

For the body to then detach it would require the rope to tear through the skin and muscles. Before that happened, however, the rope would first have to tear through the polybag itself.

Remembering that it was an effective noose that succeeded in killing the man, it should be logical to presume that the noose tightened progressively to hold on to the the next layer. After tearing the polybag and the skin and the muscular layer, it would hold on to the spine. The spine being made up of several small discs, it would take seconds to break, causing the body to fall off, and the head too, since it has nothing to hold on to.

That's a nice theory, but all it takes is a sufficiently long rope, subsequent fall, and little 'give' on the rope.

In fact, the inability to read provided evidence never faisl to amuse:

In the above, none of your requirements applied.

Quote from your link :
"But while Bandar's body remained suspended in the air, the rope bearing Barzan snapped back up. His headless corpse dropped to the floor, and the severed head landed several feet away..."

That's just what I was saying. The head cannot be left hanging to the rope.

There are precedents for all of these type of events.

Dear Duck, there are precedents for every single piece of b/s on this earth. That doesn't make it more likely...

The fact that I haven't heared of something is surely not a good indication that it never happened. But maybe it shows that it is not very common...

So I'm not saying it *can't* be suicide, I'm just saying I don't believe it... Feel free to believe whatever you want...

Of course, I'm not saying it can't be *not* suicide, but in my opinion, it does seem like suicide, because a lot of the data just seems to fit -- which is pretty much what I've been saying since the very first message in this thread.

Data? What data? Preciously little actually, unless you call data the various versions of the story that the police fed the journalists over time. How about your own investigation on the ground maybe? Or where is the autopsy report? Any alcohol or barbiturate in the blood? And how about some close-up shots of the head+bag while still dangling under the bridge, under various angles, so that we can see how it was all set? What about the Puma trousers which so conveniently permitted the clever police to identify the victim as an Italian? etc, etc...

Anyway, let's continue speculating... After all this is Bangkok related, the doc committed suicide as a forum cop already, and this is all in fine bad taste...

About Kaymanx hypothesis (in short, the head would not stay hanging on the rope after the decapitation), that's what I thought at first. But what about the the plastic bag: if attached somehow to the rope, could it help maintain the head connected to the rope after the body's sudden departure?

Seems to be that this should be properly tested. Any candidates? Or does this seem like a good idea for a MythBusters episode?

Don't see that happening in a solo self-killing event. The presence of a polybag on the head -- to my thinking -- reduces the credibility of a suicide story. If the guy wanted to ensure the success of his own self-administered hanging, and thought a bag was the best way to do that, he would have used a cloth bag which would give grip to the noose, not a plastic bag which would only help the noose to slip away.

Of course, as you point out, a lot of other data is not available and all this is speculation. We do not know, for example, at what point on the railing he tied the rope and whether it is easy for a man to jump out over what must be a very thick layer of concrete and steel frame. But what is difficult to grasp in this suicide theory is how the noose held on to the polybag despite slippery blood oozing out of the head. Remember also that such a big jump over the edge, which caused the body to tear off, would have resulted in wild oscillation of the rope making it even more difficult for it to hold on to the polybagged head.
