BIMLEE,nothing could be further from the truth than the assertion in your post of 1st June at 5-29 PM that in 1947 when British Imperial India was partitioned into Pakistan and India "Kashmir was a pure Hindu State and full of Hindu Brahmins". In fact in 1947 Kashmir`s population was 77% Sunni Muslim and only 20% Hindu of whom the brahmins were a small minority.Islam has been the dominant religion of Kashmir since the 14th century. Your assertion that "Immediate(sic) after separation(partition) Pakistan invaded Kashmir " is also untrue. When partition took place the Maharajah of Kashmir Hari Singh assumed direct rule of Kashmir in place of the departing British. He raised taxation, and this lead to an internal revolt in the Poonch region of Kashmir to which the Maharajah`s forces reacted by burning villages and massacring unarmed civilians. The Poonch rebels then recruited Pashtuns from Pakistan`s North-West Frontier Province to assist them against the Maharajah, and it was these Pashtuns who invaded Kashmir in October 1947. Today Pakistan has little control of its North-West Frontier Province. In 1947 the fledgling Pakistan State had none, and that is another reason why it is untrue to call the Pashtun invasion in 1947 an invasion by Pakistan. At the time of Partition rulers of princely states such as the Maharajah of Kashmir were encouraged by the British to accede their states to either India or Pakistan, but taking into account the wishes of their people. Because Kashmir`s population was 77% Muslim there is little doubt that their preference would have been union with Pakistan. However, the Maharajah`s forces could not cope with the invading Pashtuns, and the Maharajah appealed to the Governor-General of India for help which was given only on condition that the Maharajah agreed to join Kashmir with India. Once the Maharajah signed the Instrument of Accession,Indian soldiers entered Kashmir and the Pashtuns were driven from all but a small area of Kashmir. To India`s credit it accepted the union created by the Instrument of Accession as provisional until the will of the Kashmiri people could be ascertained by a plebiscite. However,India also insisted that no plebiscite could take place until Kashmir was cleared of all the remaining Pashtuns. Following mediation by the United Nations it was accepted by India and Pakistan that Pakistan would secure the withdrawal of the Pashtuns from Kashmir whereupon all the military forces of India and Pakistan would also withdraw as the basis for a Truce Agreement, followed by the plebiscite which the United Nations demanded must take place. Unfortunately India and Pakistan could not agree on the terms of the Truce Agreement, and so the plebiscite did not take place. This resulted in a deterioration in relations between India and Pakistan, and lead to 3 wars between them in 1965,1971,and 1999. As I have said there is little doubt that if the plebiscite had taken place the great majority of the Kashmiri population would have voted for union with Pakistan. However, recent soundings of Kashmiri opinion suggest that if a plebiscite was conducted today the majority of Kashmiris would opt neither for union with India or Pakistan, but for independence. The continuous presence of Indian and Pakistani troops in Kashmir and the resulting injury, death, and destruction of property suffered by the Kashmiri people has lead to the conviction that neither India nor Pakistan can bring peace to Kashmir, and that peace can be secured only by independence.

QQ, I am not bringing another argument here if or whether Kashmir was a Muslim state or a Hindu state. Bone of Contention here is Kashmir has become a Den or Heaven for the Terrorist. And leaving Kashmir to themselves, will create another Terrorist neighbor for India. If You can assure me contradicting to this, I will put up your proposal to the leaders of Indian Parliament for their consideration.

Bimlee, any attempt by you, however well intentioned, to persuade India to allow Kashmiris to decide for themselves whether they want independence,or union with India or Pakistan,is bound to fail. The status quo although not ideal is relatively favourable to India.Pakistan now controls only about one third of Kashmir which is relatively inaccessible, economically underdeveloped, and thinly populated. The best part of Kashmir known as the Vale of Kashmir is controlled by India. Since partition there has been significant Hindu migration from India into Kashmir which, although it has not resulted in Muslims ceasing to be a majority of the population in Kashmir, there are now many more Hindus in Kashmir than there were at the time of partition in 1947.These Hindus are not unnaturally opposed to the union of Kashmir with Pakistan, and also to an independent Kashmir. Having fought 3 wars with Pakistan over Kashmir India is not disposed either to cede to Pakistan the area of Kashmir it controls,or to recognise an independent Kashmir which would be likely to be hostile to India due to the resentment born of decades of Indian occupation. Also either alternative would be viewed by most Indians as a betrayal of the many Hindus who have been encouraged to migrate to Kashmir since partition.
