Airline loses customers after moving airports
=================================

Thai Airways International's decision to move a large part of its domestic services to the old Don Muang airport has resulted in a loss of tens of thousands of passengers who require connecting flights.

The flag carrier could have lost as many as 70,000 foreign travellers, who were transferring from international flights to domestic destinations or travelling from domestic routes to overseas, since THAI started operating through the 93-year-old airport on March 25, according to insiders.

These travellers have turned to other carriers due to the hassle and long wait in connecting with international flights - all of which run through Suvarnabhumi Airport, a time-consuming 27 km away.

Many of these passengers who may travel on THAI flights from abroad have instead used the domestic services of Bangkok Airways and the budget carrier Thai AirAsia, which have continued to operate all flights through Suvarnabhumi.

THAI operates 31 domestic flights a day through Don Muang, offering more than 8,000 seats a day, while retaining 11 flights a day at the new airport.

THAI is one of the three local airlines that opted to offer domestic flights through the old airport after the government earlier this year decided, following several policy flip-flops, to reopen the old airport for non-connecting domestic services to reduce congestion at Suvarnabhumi.

The other two players at Don Muang are THAI's budget subsidiary Nok Airlines and the local no-frills airline One-Two-Go, both of which did not experience similar problems to THAI.The response from connecting passengers has caught the national carrier's management off-guard as they believed that domestic flights allocated at Suvarnabhumi should deal with the connection issue for foreign travellers.

The THAI domestic flights retained at Suvarnabhumi, which the airline anticipated to require connections to international destinations, are those from popular tourist spots such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket and Krabi.

The business loss prompted THAI's board to discuss the issue at its Monday meeting. No easy solution is seen though some executives said the airline may be compelled to cut some flights at Don Muang and return them to Suvarnabhumi.

THAI may be reluctant revert to Suvarnabhumi because it spearheaded the campaign to reopen the old airport.

THAI has spent about 20 million baht to re-establish its presence over at Don Muang.

Industry analysts said THAI's loss of connecting passengers reflects a major flaw in operating dual airports within close proximity.

The use of two airports has increased the flight transfer time in Bangkok from between two and three hours to between five and seven hours.

Critics said THAI may have underestimated the impact of passenger connectivity to its business as statistics show that there are always passengers on every THAI domestic flight who need to transfer to international flights.

Airport work going too slowly
======================

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont was not satisfied yesterday with the problem-solving delays at Suvarnabhumi airport by Airports of Thailand (AoT).

Deputy Transport Minister Sansern Wongcha-um quoted the prime minister as saying there had been no concrete solutions over the past seven months to the problems at the new airport.

He expressed his concern in a meeting of the committee overseeing policy on operations at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports of AoT.

It was the prime minister's second visit to the new airport which is plagued by problems ranging from cracks on runways and taxiways to safety at the terminal and contract disputes over commercial areas inside the building between AoT and King Power International Group.

The panel agreed to hold a meeting every month to speed up problem-solving.

It also agreed in principle on AoT's proposal for the government to shoulder the burden of compensation payments for households exposed to harmful aircraft noise from Suvarnabhumi, according to the deputy minister. A committee will be set up to determine compensation figures for affected residents, he added.

AoT has received 389 million baht to pay compensation to 71 households.

Four households which agreed to move from the area are expected to receive their compensation next month. Another 18 households want the airport agency to repair their houses.

Mr Sansern said AoT was asked to speed up talks with the remaining households.

On the termination of contracts with King Power, AoT has been awaiting a letter from the Attorney-General's Office to officially notify the firm about the nullification of the contracts.

King Power was granted the contracts to run duty free shops and commercial areas at Suvarnabhumi. But the AoT board terminated the contracts citing a lack of transparency. AoT also reported that 70% of the damaged runways had been fixed and experts will be hired to find the real causes of the damage.

The National Legislative Assembly's committee investigating problems at Suvarnabhumi led by panel chairman Bannawit Keng-rian and Praphan Khoonmee, head of the inquiry team, yesterday met the Assets Scrutiny Committee (ASC) to consult on the investigation into King Power's contracts.

Adm Bannawit quoted ASC secretary Kaewsan Atipho as saying that the ASC had found wrongdoings involving the contracts and it will probe the matter further. It will file a criminal suit against the firm after the investigation is complete, he said.

Report from The Nation dated Monday 7 May 2007 :-

Tourists lose valuables in scanner scam at airport
=====================================

There have been numerous reports of theft at Suvarnabhumi Airport, police say, including at least two from tourists who say their valuables disappeared while they were being scanned.

German tourist Dr Richard Chrobop, 60, said his 2.5-karat diamond ring, worth about Bt500,000, disappeared while going through a scanner at the airport when he was flying back to Germany on April 24.

Police also received a complaint yesterday from a Japanese tourist who said 800 euros (Bt 35,400) in cash disappeared from his bag while it was being scanned at the airport.

Photographs retrieved from the scanning machine show that Chrobop's diamond ring disappeared after it entered the machine, said an airport official who asked not to be named.

Piyarat Donbandit, a relative of the doctor, filed a complaint with Rachadheva Police on his behalf.

Piyarat said Chrobop put a jacket and other possessions, including the ring, into a basket to pass through the scanning machine at the departure exit. The ring was gone when the basket came out from the other side, Piyarat said.

Airport staff refused the doctor's request to meet police but gave him a compensation claim form and rushed him to his plane, Piyarat said.

The airport official said photographs from the scanner showed that the ring was in the basket as it passed through the scanner.

The official declined, however, to comment further, saying it might affect the reputation of Airports of Thailand.

Piyarat said he had written to airport officials asking to check the scanner's photographic record but was provided with unclear CCTV pictures taken from one angle. He was told that there was only one camera in the area.

Lt-Colonel Sitthichai Champa-ngam, an investigator at Rachadheva Police Station, said there had been numerous complaints about possessions lost at the airport.

It has been difficult to investigate the claims because the airport does not cooperate, Sitthichai said. To examine CCTV records at the airport, police have to send official letters asking for permission from the airport.

"I believe someone took the ring while it was passing through the machine," Sitthichai said.

It is difficult to believe there is only one CCTV in the area, he said.

"[Theft by airport staff] is not good for image of the country," he added.
