ThaidUp, Re: "But they are promoting business that bring economic and technology advances to the Kingdom." This trend is also affecting my TGF. The daughter of the Queen has decreed that the school systems change to a more standardized, techno-capable curriculum so that some day, Thailand can be more competitive in this area. All the SEA countries are playing a "keep your currency lower" game with the Chinese in order to preserve what export businesses to the U.S.A. and others that they still have. If/when China unpegs its currency to the U.S. dollar, we may see a free fall of some of these SEA economies. In the area of my TGF's education, she was hit with this last month, when signing up for the last 3 years (10,11,12) of her GED. It created quite a stir in the school system and delayed her starting. They are still sorting it out, but are giving children the first priority for funding and teachers. In fact, though her adult-ed classmates were willing to pay for the courses (just as they had in previous classes), the public school teachers were told to refund the money as they were not allowed to accept money from the public. Result: no teachers to teach, just a bunch of dedicated student teachers helping until the system sorts itself out. The upside - she is being asked to do stuff that requries more independent research and study, rather than all-rote learning Like her report on basketball she was grumbling to me on the phone about last night: Ý Ý Balls: "What do you know about basketball?" Ý Ý Ý TGF, with sardonic laugh: "nothing, bababoe!" So yes, there are some fundamental changes brewing. I personally think the educational changes are a good thing. But like all cultural progressions, I worry that the "sanuuk" of the Thai culture may fade, hopefully (and selfishly) not within my lifetime. And now, back to the thread ... - Balls

Quote: from AlterEgo on 5:47 pm on July 21, 2003 REZ; with just 94 posts as you have at the time I write this... you are hardly an old pro... especially tryin to give advice about how to use the board. Ý If you start out as an asshole, like you did, I can see you being history real fast. ÝI, on the other hand, am kind, informative, and friendly, until attacked by the likes of you.
Have to set something straight here ... I'm not an old pro ... never pretended to be one ... but I do know how this forum works ... I've read the newbie/helpsections ... I've put a bit of effort in getting to know the people here before opening my mouth ... I also never try to be disrespectful ... but sometimes ... lets go back to our first meeting ...
Quote: from AlterEgo on 1:03 am on July 19, 2003 OK, So I don't spend hours on end on this Forum.... And have done a quick search... What is: UTFSE???
You asked a question and I gave you a friendly and helpfull reply.
Quote: from rezyek on 1:11 am on July 19, 2003 use the f_cking search engine all the way at the top of your screen on the right hand side ... I could've said: UTFSE (like google) but I didn't ...
I even made a joke about how not to reply to questions that are quite simple to answer (like Ýgoogle) ... but you misunderstood me and started flaming straight away ... Then I sent you a PM (personal/private message) asking you in a very friendly way why you gave me an answer like that and that I could not understand your anger. But you did not respond. So my conclusion to that was that you don't know how to use the PM-system. Hope you see my point ...

"5 Star hotels in Bangkok price themselves at international prices even though I am fairly sure that many of their labour related costs are much less than in other countries." Pricing of hotels in Thailand is not like in the US. Everything is negotiable in Thailand. Room rates are much lower via travel agencies, even though the hotel must pay a commission. That is just the way it works in Thailand. I guess some unsuspecting tourists pay full price, who knows?

Well here is another story of where Thailand is heading. They do not mention how many free massage coupons you get with these membership cards. Cabinet to vote today on Bt1m cards for rich foreigners Published on Jul 22, 2003 The Cabinet will today consider a proposal from the Tourism and Sports Ministry to offer Thailand Privilege Cards to affluent foreigners at Bt1 million apiece, a Government House source said yesterday. The ministry expects the scheme to earn at least Bt1 trillion over the next five years and entice as many as 1 million card members. "The target group is high-end customers such as investors, businessmen, world celebrities and rich long-stay tourists," the source said. The cards will offer lifetime membership, special services, free transfers between airports and hotels, free check-ups at reputed hospitals, discounts on Thai International Airways, special rates at a number of hotels, golf courses, spas and restaurants, as well as business incentives. "Members will get extra benefits when investing in real estate development," the source said. The scheme is expected to greatly increase the number of high-end tourists to Thailand and help make it the tourism capital of Asia. "The huge income from card sales will be used to enhance tourism services and facilities in the country. Part of the re-venue will be earmarked for long-term operating costs," the source said. The Tourism and Sports Ministry wants the Cabinet to approve the setting up of the Thailand Privilege Card Com-pany Limited, fully owned by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, to operate the project. The company would be profit-oriented and the profits used to develop tourism products and services, the source said. The ministry has also asked for Bt350 million as initial funding for the project, which would go towards establishing a comprehensive call centre, marketing and advertising expenses and administration costs, the source said. It's not PC to say from the western point of view... Ýbut in order for Thailand to compete with China (or any other Asian tiger), we need to import more Chinese people. Ý ÝIt's not an absolute, but the stronger tiger economies tend to have more. Ý Here, we only have about 15% of the population. Ý Ý You can talk monetary policy, management reform, and politics all day, but it won't mean anything until we get more Huaren here (preferably of Hokkien and Shanghainese origin) to form a large SME growth engine base and to implement/maintain it generation after generation. Not like I told you so or anything... If true, this is EXACTLY what I thought it would be, albeit even MORE blatant: Get rid of the (Thai point of view) parasites, encourage (or at least not discourage) short-term, bring-your-tip-money/spend it/get out tourists, and make the ones who have capital PAY for the privilege of residing in the Kingdom. A million VIP cards?!? Ý@ US$25,000? Not bloody likely... This will be a PR nightmare for Thailand. ÝAlready considered sex-tourist heaven, uppityness on this scale will surely result in a backlash. As if. What a load of crap. haam sup

I would take a look at the card. If it offered a hassle free no travel visa extension and various other bennies and it was a one payment deal. Many countries offer easy visa access to rich businessmen who will start a business.
