Latest news.
From that link:

The owners predict the new regulations would destroy smaller businesses that operate in an already fierce atmosphere of competition for customers.

This is not a bad thing. Business is supposed to be Darwinistic.

Pattaya is already over-capacity. Smart business says you build a surplus and use it in tough times to destroy your competition OR you partner before the crisis arrives if you're not seeking growth.

The big bars will survive. These people have only themselves to blame for a bad strategy.

Everyone has probably noticed the Thai tendancy to badly oversaturate every market. You have whole Sois dedicated [largely] to haircuts, or electronics, or bad suits. The owners make no attempt at differentiation of any sort; it's just the same crapola over and over.

Many business owners see the new law as a threat to their constitutional right to earn a living and as such, are ready to fight tooth and nail to see the changes either overturned completely or more fairly modified.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Instead of trying something different, innovating, whatever, they want to use a loser strategy like this.

Once this gains traction there are going to be both fantastic bargains among the failed bars and an opportunity for economies of scale to take hold AND much reduced competition and better profit margins.

One bar owner told reporters that the new law would irreparably damage smaller businesses, force them to close and leave many people without jobs.

It's a good thing Somchai, you're just too dumb to realize it. Surplus labor means lower wages and better looking talent, less competition and profound bargains if you can afford expansion.

Anyone who hasn't blown their profits on buying themselves "face" goods is sitting pretty right now. The rest are about to get what they deserve. If the government hadn't done it, the next SARS/terrorism incident/etc. would have done it anyhow.

JackRabbit present...

F R E S H I N F O:

I contacted a FLB boarder, who is there now and here are his comments of the situation:

no midnight closing, it won't happen, locally there is to much economic loss if they go to midnight. Most the beer bars are open to 3 or 4 am but just turn the music down. The Agogo's close at 2:00am. Yes I'm here now and it's a little mixed in terms of how busy the place is, some nights are very busy and others seem quiet. All in all there' plenty of women and good times to be had. Cheers

I wonder what the regulations will be on hotel & guest houses?
Maybe they will be able to serve drinks 24hrs a day, here in the UK hotels can sell drinks outside licensing hours, but you have to be registered as a guest.
Most bars (excluding Beer Bars) have rooms that are made available to guests, so they could become hotels and the girls would then become “bell hops” doing room service

I'd be curious to know if any of these gov't folks have :

- mistresses?
- go to massage parlors?
- have ugly wives?

Harry

You did not read about Thaksin banning Thai Rak Thai members being banned from having mistresses.

Kuhn-T has dictatorial control freak tendencies, things are likely to get worse before they get better.

Honestly, this new entertainment zoning plan is absolutely ridiculouse. Surely they are not serious, surely they are not that stupid. I read they want some zones to operate from 9.00pm to 12.00am, what a joke, and even worse pubs not to open until 6.00pm. So does that mean I cant go to the dubliner, hard rock or o'reillys etc for lunch and a few pints. And the good old happy hours from 4.00pm. This is just absurd. What are you supposed to do all arvo. Whats the point of spending your hard earnt money on a trip to a place where cant go and enjoy a few beers in the arvo.
Is Thaksin a communist is he. Thailand is going down hill.
Looks the end of an era.

Its really sad.

Looks like the fillo may be getting a birth.

Agreed on the Darwinistic nature of business, and how this will cull those that don't prepare for a rainy day -- but I disagree that the gov't cracking down is a good thing. That's not a market influence anymore.

Furthermore, based on the crackdown, it is also quite obvious that they want the total elimination of such venues (which is stupid), so my guess would be that the next step is only 30 minutes of opening hours, or some crack like that.

Overall, influences of unforeseen market conditions (SARS, chicken flu) do cull the market, and provide valid thinning of the herd -- TRT crackdown on such business' does not, IMO.

Harry, 30 minutes? Wanna get a stopwatch and go for a full reductio ad absurdum?

Your point would be valid except that crackdowns, like other factors, are cyclical. There's too much money in it and no P4P scene ever gets shut down 100%. You can get laid in Iran for sh_t's sake.

Now, as the joke goes, we're just quibbling about price... The local cops take too big a pad to ever let the central government completely shut it down.

And let's not suck too many farts out of the asses of Thaksin, Purachai and the TRT mafia. Those clowns will be lucky to even be footnotes to history.
