As for the Chinese Leadership the comment about a 'sheep herders' background may have applied 20 years ago but if you check the current 'Who’s Who' of Chinese Leadership you will see that since Mao died they have been carefully groomed for their positions. Many hold advanced degrees from the best Universities in the world.
I should have been more accurate, in that respect -- I was not referring to the top levels of the Chinese gov't. These folks all read really well on a resumé, but unfortunately, while they certainly are the ones setting policy, they are not the ones executing and enforcing those policies.
Provincial and regional leaders, the ones expected to follow policy, are the ones I was referencing, and you will find that these 'leaders'' backgrounds are far more mundane...
And the local politicos in the US (esp California) are any different???

That is a response to madfrog's allegations that the Bush Administration was pushing the sale of Tamiflu to in the US as part of a conspiracy to make money for Rumsfeld.
Obviously, if Roche is not going to deliver on contracts in the US, then any actions by the US Government is moot thus undermining the contention that Rumsfeld has anything to do with promoting an Avian Flu myth.
In my mind Rumsfeld is an evil man and has been as long a I have known him. However Avian Flu is not a myth and should not be discounted to support wild conspiracy theroies

I realised that, but you cannot ascertain that from that article read it more carefully.
The article says the US order for Tamiflu will be suspended not cancelled, the order will still be delivered, but it is being delayed whilst Roche gets out the normal winter (flu season) stocks of Tamiflu to countries throughout the world who actually need it for something real.
Anyway even if the US order was cancelled, they are still going to make billions from orders right around the rest of the world.

Yes, alegedly she did not die from Avian FLu, but some unspecified fever with flu-like symptoms (!), but the attitude of the father, expert farmer that he is, sends shivers up and down my spine:
"We had dead chickens before and nobody has ever got sick because of that. So I thought it's okay"
Oh, by all means, there's no risk at all. Hygiene, anyone? Common sense, anyone?
