Exactly, CG, my point as well - certainly not Hermie, or some other pundit. It'll be curious to see which way it goes - either way, I think we can gain positively from it.

There also seems to be this sentiment that it wasn't just the greed that did him in with the Thai people. They feel he sold out Thailand to Singapore. Since the Thais are so fervently nationalistic, this was a big no-no and a political blunder. -- Balls

So what happens if Thaksin wins the election? Why are so many people asking him to resign right before the election? If the people don't want him, then they can vote for someone else in a free and orderly process. People ought to be protesting in the streets where there are no free elections at all, and no chance for people to elect their own government. For example in Syria, North Korea, Iran (they have elections but they are rigged and only approved candidates can run). The truth is that The Nation and other left wing forces in Thailand are afraid of democracy and have no intention of honoring the outcome of the election, which is a sad commentary on their true intentions.

And let's not forget that many, many people in Thailand support Taksin. Maybe more than we think or are led to believe.

Exactly - it appears there are a few people that are vocal, and very loud, and able to get thousands of people to walk in the streets of Bangkok - which looks impressive. But if these are offset by hundred's of thousands in the countryside voting for him, he'd still win. As CG said, we'll know soon enough. It's interesting, though, that's for sure.

Are you talking about the people in remote areas who are "paid" a few hundred baht to support Thaksin, he is a crook just like politicians in the UK.

Yep, Thaksin is a crook, is corrupt, is draining the countries coffers for his own well-being, and in that way is like all the other politicians in Asia. So nothing new there, lol! My TGF voiced the sentiment to me about Thai people being pissed off about the national sellout to Singapore. I don't think she had a problem with the money-making aspect per se, as that's Asia, just the nationalism deal. In reality, though the upcountry people are paid 100 baht for their votes, all the candidates pay all the farmers (provided they have the campaign budget). My TGF said to me, rather cynically, "Do you really think Isaan people so stupid that 100 baht matter? Everybody [all the candidates] give 100 baht." By which she meant it was just the usual season for money grabbing at handouts, irrespective of the giver or the voting process. In reality, what may swing the Isaan vote are the changes on the ground. My TGF's dad is the village headman, and I've been with her to visit him in the local Amphur meeting house, where the pooyaibans from the surrounding Amphur's work together. The Kamnan who oversees the pooyaiban meetings attends too, and they work on plans for road building, water projects, and fertilizer distribution. The money that has flowed in from TRT in BKK to their villages has allowed them to pour concrete roads (a big deal in the rainy season), and to bring running water to the village households for the first time (the houses now have one spigot per house, that runs for a few hours in the morning, so trips to the river and reliance on rain water are lessened). These two things may not seem like a big deal, but in the lives of the villagers, they represent a big step forward in creature comforts. Thaksin didn't have to spend much to do this, but the political rewards have been large. - Balls

Evidence?.examples?...Actually....this is the difference between him and the others.....he doesn't directly steal the countries money. He engineers business solutions to benefit his companies, but to suggest he empties the countries bank accounts into his own is neither true nor even an accusation by his biggest enemies. Remember, he now no longer owns those companies....and that is what got him into hot water...... As for the rest of your post 100% accurate....Thaksin has done more for the country in terms of infrastructure that all of the governments of the last 20 years, that is why he has the support of the rural poor. The changes in one particular rural area I know so well are incredible. Roads where there were none, widened rivers to alleviate flooding etc...the 30B health scheme has worked wonders for many..... That is why it is incredulous to me that the man can make so many stupid errors, Dr Thaksin is a very intelligent man but his manner leaves so much to be desired. I personally think he is the only man capable of leading the country at this time for all his faults, I don't actually see anyone as an alternative....Abhisit as an individual is very likeable, but the old dinosaurs of the Democrat party are very hungry, their accounts do need filling after years in the wilderness, and it'd be back to the bad bad old days, which will be far worse than this.

Not just farmers in the countryside. My in-laws are working class Bangkok suburbia and fully support Thaksin. They have been very concerned by the protests and worried about the future. The younger members of the family had been influenced by the media and protests but were pulled into line by the parents on election day - democracy Thai style - you are free to vote for whoever the parents tell you to vote for. LOL The News here in OZ this morning (Monday April 3rd) is that the early count is indicating not enough votes for Thaksin. Tick tock.....wait and see
