Just came back from Chantaburi... such a mess... most of downtown flooded, cars couldn't get to Chant it seems,we waded through water at hips level while others were having fun on small boats...wondered if a cute girls diving around would come up and bite my dick from beneath...scary floods... higher waters were announced for early evening than I started to fear beeing stuck in Chant for a few days and the hotel called a big truck able to cross the water to the bus station. Amazing journey in a huge new thai lake... still many kids having fun though... than all the way back to BKK in bus... may sanuk! (than a dinner in Aldo and king prawns downed with black russians... sanuk kwa ieuu!)

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 7 October 2006 :- Chanthaburi, Rayong under water ========================= Chanthaburi and Rayong provinces were declared disaster zones yesterday after flood levels rose to almost two metres high in certain city areas, and still rising, following a week of heavy rain. In Chanthaburi, relentless downpours had worsen the flood situation in Muang district, which has been inundated by water between one and two metres high. The district town yesterday looked like a large basin, and flood relief workers were struggling to drain floodwater out. Report from The Nation dated Saturday 7 October 2006 :- Impending flood disasters for provinces around Bangkok ======================================== The Royal Irrigation Department Saturday issued its first warning for Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, and areas outside the flood barriers of Bangkok to strengthen and heighten their flood barriers and prepare for possible evacuation if they fail. The department said heavy rain in the North and upper Central regions caused water flowing through Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district to reach 3,338 cubic metres per second and that the eastern and western banks of the Chao Phya River could no longer serve as natural water-collecting "monkey cheek" areas. This, combined with the highest sea tide between October 9 and 13 would lead to the Chao Phya River between Chai Nat and Samut Prakan rising higher than normal, especially at the low-laying riverside areas in Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, and areas outside the flood barriers of Bangkok, the department said. Report from Bangkok Post dated Sunday 8 October 2006 :- Flood alert for Bangkok region ======================= Despite preparations and calming official assurances, authorities now are warning riverside residents of Thailand's lower Chao Phraya River basin to prepare for floods and to pitch in to build higher dykes and embankments along the rising river. Seasonal high tides are expected to peak Monday and Tuesday ( 9 & 10 ) ctober 2006), said a warning by the Royal Irrigation Department. Local authorities were ordered to reinforce and heighten flood barriers along the river to prevent flooding as the capital region is threatened by rising floodwaters. Phathum Thani and Nonthaburi provinces as well as areas outside the flood barriers of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) are especially at risk. The department's water monitoring centre said the waterflow at the Chao Phraya Dam is 2,789 cubic metres per second, while at Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district it is faster at 3,338 cubic metres per second, increasing the water level in the Chao Phraya River from Chai Nat to the sea at Samut Prakan. The centre asked that residents along the Chao Phraya River should help with the region's flood defenses.

Latenight- At least you were there, bro. I'm jealous of that. Several months back, I was impressed by scenes I saw filmed around Chantaburi whilst watching a Thai film. Tried to get there on my own and also tried to bring a Bangkok gal with me, but neither efforts got off the ground. What can you tell us of the area? Surely it'll dry out and be open for tourism again one day in the not too distant future. I'd love to know where to go and what to see thereabouts.....

138,000 flood victims become ill BANGKOK: -- ealth Ministry Sunday warned people to avoid walking through floodwater, which often host germs and leeches. The warning came after more than 138,000 flood victims became ill and one of them was found with a leech in his anus. "Please travel around by boats, if possible. If not, please dress carefully! Wear underpants and long pants. Also cover the lower part of your pants with plastic bags and tie tightly to ensure that no leech can climb in," the ministry's permanent secretary Dr Prat Boonyawongvirot said Sunday. According to him, a man in Sing Buri was hospitalised after wading through chest-high floodwater. At the hospital, a doctor helped removing a leech from his anus. "He's now safe. But we would like to warn children not to play in the floodwater," he said. He added that leeches could enter human bodies via nose, mouth, eyes, anus, vagina and urethra. Aside from leeches, he said germs also dwelt in floodwater and could spread various diseases especially conjunctivitis, skin diseases and athlete's foot disease. Prat said his ministry's mobile medical units had already treated 138,328 flood victims in flood-hit areas, which included Nonthaburi, Phisanulok, Sukhothai, Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, Angthong and Ayutthaya. "We have also distributed medicines and garbage bags," he said. Currently, a large number of flood victims could not use toilets and need the garbage bags when nature called. -- The Nation 2006-10-08

Skip, not sure what you want to know... I go there often but hardly leave downtown. As soon as we left the city with bus it didn't look flooded anymore. No surprise about the germs in the water, I really got worried about beeing struck there; Now in paris again, drier and colder. Downtpown, it was very inpressive though, I woke up and from the KPgrand 17th floor you could see very wide patches of water, the river went up way over its shore. Some friends had their house still dry, but in one office I went they already had one meter high water. than from the KP bridge to the Bus station it was abt 100% underwater, and we're talking about over 1km ride. I actually never witnessed a similar lanscape before. Amazing but as a business trip it sucked... updates from local friends are mixed, a couple claims it's way worse and the last one whose office was flooded says it`s about the sane. Leechees sure don`t look good. If you want to go to Chant though no need to think too much, you can go down on abt any BKK street abt any time and start flagging down taxis. Soon one of them will accept going for 1200 to 1400bht + highway fee. Not a place I would go though o vacation.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 10 October 2006 :- Floodwaters threaten Bangkok Floodwaters that have devastated parts of northern Thailand, leaving 39 people dead and more than two million with submerged homes, were flowing south toward Bangkok Tuesday threatening to flood the capital city. The high water is flowing down the Chao Phraya River that drains most of northern and central Thailand before it winds its way through greater Bangkok and into the Gulf of Thailand 20 kilometres south of Bangkok. This year's are the worst floods since 1995 but the situation should start to improve by Friday, Irrigation Department Director General Samart Chokkanapitak told the press. "The rain from the North will start to reduce, but the weather situation is unstable," he said, suggesting if more rains fall in the water-logged north and central provinces it will also mean more trouble for Bangkok. Bangkok was only saved from massive flooding Tuesday because land owners led by His Majesty the King allowed the Irrigation Department to flood huge tracks of farmland in the central provinces from 30 to 130 kilometres north of the capital starting Monday. (See separate story: King saves Bangkok from flooding.) If the floodwaters had not been diverted Bangkok would have been a very wet place Tuesday. Samart said the Irrigation Department is trying to save housing areas by flooding fields instead. Also on Tuesday, the King said the new government should make dealing with the flooding one of its top three priorities. The floods so far have caused more than 240 million baht ($6 million) in damage, the government reported. But the Department of Rural Roads reported separately that it estimated road damage alone durng the past several months at 850 million baht. At least 228 roads throughout the country were damaged by the fallout from Typhone Xangsane, which hit Vietnam and spread into Thailand. Director-general Surachai Thansitpong estimated it would take two to four months to fix all the damaged roads and bridges.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 11 October 2006 :- Floods bear down on Bangkok ======================= Faced with the largest volume of water ever recorded heading towards Bangkok, city officials worked feverishly, and expressed optimism they could save the Thal capital from inundation. Governor Apirak Kosayodhin and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) could look northward and see the Chao Phraya River rising to record flows. At Nakhon Sawan this afternoon, the river reached its greatest speed and volume since record keeping started 60 years ago. But Mr Apirak was confident in the city's defences and readiness to cope with the influx of waters flowing from the North, heavy rains through the night, and high tides up the Chao Phraya from the Gulf of Thailand. He said the BMA has prepared sufficient manpower, equipment and supplies such as sandbags to cope with greater flows of water from Nakhon Sawan. That is where four northern rivers join to form the Chao Phraya, or Mother of Rivers, now at flood stage. Royal Irrigation Department director-general Samart Chokanapitak said the river's level in Bangkok is now at 2.02 metres now and won't cause flooding in the capital at present. However, he said, he is concerned that the waterflow at Nakhon Sawan has increased to 5,145 cubic metres per second, surpassing the highest measured speed and volume of 4,800 cubic metres recorded when the worst flood occurred in 1995. The increased water level in the Chao Phraya at Nakhon Sawan was caused by waters pouring in from the flood-soaked Yom River carrying runoff from the North, he said. According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, 17 provinces nationwide are now fully engaged in combating floods. The meteorological department forecast that rainfall will decrease in the North, the Northeast, the East, and the Central regions, but more heavy rain is expected in the South particularly, in the upper south. Local residents in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Chumphon should brace for heavy rains, flash flooding, and forest run-off. The BMA is confident it could be able to protect the capital from flood, Governor Apirak said, adding that if the high tides are not critical and there was no heavy rain, the situation would be under control, said the governor. He said the BMA will work closely with the Royal Irrigation Department on water discharge from the dams upriver from Bangkok.
