Mr Alan, Exactly my response too. 1. No point trying to shift the focus on to the alcohol in the place. A pub is the natural place for alcohol and even cigarettes to be present. The same cannot be said about pyrotechnics or firecrackers. 2. Also, in my opinion, given a choice, it was better that the 800 people stood outside and used their cameras rather than add to the stampede by trying to help when they probably did not know how to (assuming again that they didn't get in the way of those fleeing). Fifteen people carrying out a rescue in a focussed way would achieve better results than too many laymen from outside coming in the way without any knowledge of the layout. The photographs are not just keepsakes (although some did attempt to capture ghosts). In many cases laymen's pictures have helped identify crucial facts about accidents or incidents. 3. Finally this wasn't an accident in which nobody was to blame, as is wrongly being made out.

i agree that the second account is not objective to a certain degree. spoke with with two guys from thonglor police last night. apparently more than 500 bottles of whisky etc became molotow cocktails. not to be underestimated. rtb

not to be underestimated, yes... but not to be blamed either. The fireworks were to blame.

Think about it.... if there were 1000 people there, they are not going to have 1 bottle for every two customers. I don't doubt that there were instances of the bottles then exploding but I would hazard a guess that the customers had already fled their tables and the bar (leaving the bottles behind) as the blaze was now roaring. And many of those bottles may have been in storage or at the bar. Someone wrote a letter to the editor of BKK Post the other day that seemed to have some knowledge of fire safety (IMO). He was writing about the number of people that could exit within 2 1/2 minutes and the size of the door, etc. To make a long story short, there were way too many people in the joint for it not to become a disaster. But I have never seen a "capacity" sign posted in one of these places.

"Capacity? SCHMAPACITY? We full capacity when so full can take no more money!" By the way, are the owners of Santika still 'missing' (i.e. ran away to not be found) ?

Fire-disaster club owner meets police; prepares to compensate victims BANGKOK: -- In another development, the major partner of the Santika Club, Wisuth Setsawat, accompanied by his attorney, met deputy national police chief Pol. Gen. Jongrak Jutanont at Thong Lor police station. Mr. Wisuth told journalists he is quite "depressed" and had not escaped anywhere as he was also injured and received treatment at a hospital. He said he had decided to meet police investigators to display his sincerity and ready to take responsibility for the tragic incident. Initially, Mr. Wisuth said he had compensated relatives of 11 of the dead Bt20,000 each and had collected money totaling Bt2 million from 12 other partners of the club to be distributed to the next-of-kin of the fatalities and those survivors who were injured. A centre will be set up to accept donations aimed at assisting inferno victims, Mr. Wisuth said, insisting that the incident would leave his partners and him unable to claim insurance money because their coverage had expired four months ago and they did not renew it.* So now we know : in Thailand the price to burn a human being alive is 20K baht only... Come to think of it, even if the insurance policy had indeed been renewed, the insurers would never have paid the claims anyway since fireworks were used indoors --- in other words, wilful negligence. I now suspect that IS the reason no claim has been filed, since a refusal by the insurance company would have sent many skeletons tumbling out --- oh no, I didn't intend that horrible pun.

A friend of mine who had gone outside for a cigarette missed the fireworks inside. I heard it from his ex, looks like smoking saved his life.

Better to be the victim of a disaster together with many others than alone. If with many, you get lots of help (think 9/11, Katrina, etc.). If alone, well, you are f***ed.
