Living in Isaan recently has given me a little insight into why the people feel so strongly about Thaksin. My wife and I disagree about him. I think he is a crook and she thinks otherwise.

The biggest thing she keeps referring to as a plus from his administration is the 30 baht medical plan he put into effect for the people of Thailand. Under this plan, any Thai citizen with an ID card can go to a government hospital and be treated for 30 baht.

The other item is the one time payment of 1 million baht his administration approved for all villages/towns. She says there were many good things done in her village with this money. I wasn't here then but my guess would be the village chief got a large part of this money and then spent a little on very obvious changes and improvements. That's the way things work up here.

When I point out Thaksin's actions, the attitude here, very simply put, is...all politicians are crooks. So what?

In short, the people of Isaan, as well as the Chiang Mai area, still like the guy.

I do believe the red shirts have a reason to complain and the demonstrations are the only way they can voice
their feelings.

The yellow shirts used anarchy, and a legal system that was in their pockets, to overthrow the legally elected government. Thaksin's government is the last legally elected one in Thailand.

My suggestions to the yellow shirts are to hold another election and try to win it this time.

They might get lucky and pull off an Obama like miracle. Then they could ignore the constitution and do whatever they want. Just like Hussein.

EPC glad to know you have not drunk the kool-aid but I must question some of this...

Everyone has a right to protest but anarchy can only be assigned to the red shirts.. you never say anything like the level of violence last year with the yellow shirt protests. I saw the buses burning, the propane bombs, the molotovs, etc. deployed by the RS mob. having gone to see both sides over the process, if the yellows had a violence/anarchy scale of 1, the Reds were a clear and easy 10

According to the courts, the elections were not fair and therefore the PPP was not "legally elected". I like how the reds declared victory with Pojaman was found not guilty and some charges against Toxin were thrown out but when he was found guilty, they protested the courts are corrupt. You can't have it both ways....

The Obama miracle was born from 8 years of lies and deception finally reaching a point of no return. When the local residents (not red, not yellow) took up arms against the red mob, that was the point of no return here. Had the RS not retreated, there would have been blood, a lot more, on the streets.

Thanks for the input.

Anarchy is described as the absence of any form of political authority and political disorder and confusion. Violence does not have to occur for anarchy to take place.

The court rulings were based, as I recall, on the fact the
PPP bought votes, thereby voiding the election.

Somewhere in this thread, I have made a post that said
all the political parties bought votes in this village in Isaan. Perhaps this is the only village in all of Thailand that both parties bought votes but I seriously doubt it.

But (isn't there always a but?), while there was no violence with the yellow shirts, may I remind you the government did nothing to stop them, thereby avoiding the violence.

And (there is always an 'and' as well), didn't the yellow shirts occupy the international airport for a number of days, destroying equipment and the reputation of Thailand at the same time?

Anarchy is anarchy, regardless of what color shirt they are wearing.

Well said EPC. I can hardly believe it, we agree on something political for once! Let me check my pulse... Oh, and by the way, I think your wife hit the nail on the head when it comes to Mr. T's enduring power and appeal.

Really nice post, quack quack. Well thought out and as coherent as all your other posts.

You obviously burned up today's allotment of brain cells with that one.

Now you can rest up and dream about your last visit to LOS.

I will accept the textbook definition of anarchy however common belief is that anarchy and violence go hand-in-hand.

But on the other points... The government did order the police in to shoot the tear gas (oh, btw the way, they were exploding canisters, which cause 2 deaths and several injuries. In addition, the numerous grenade attacks on the yellows with reportedly military grade weapons does leave some wondering who was behind this.

As for Suva....i never heard of any equipment being destroyed (but it would not surprise me). Oddly enough I have spoke to 100s of tourist since then and <2% indicated this was a concern. Most were intrigued that something like this could happen and no one was killed.

It all just supports the marketing tab line "amazing thailand"

I don't have the energy or time to look it up, but I recall some damage being made to equipment in the tower when they took over flight control.

I'm not sure it is right but I would stake dafty's reputation on it.

In my opinion the actions of the yellow shirts were no different from the actions of the red ones. Both sides were and are wrong and should not be tolerated by the authorities.

But (again?), we must remember....TIT.

Thai courts and Police are very honest and precise. Here is one opinion on the case against Thaksin:

If Law is Law
by Ink on Sun Nov 02, 2008 6:56 am [12.72.26.xx]

Ever wonder why Khunying Pajamarn has not been found to be inviolation of anything in the Ratchadapisek land deal while Thaksin is found guilty of abusing his power over the same land deal?

I thought the ruling was “interesting” so I went on a little hunt to see what the boo-ha-ha is all about.

Well, judge for yourself….

The FIDF is an entity set up to solve financial crises in the country many years before Thaksin arrived on the political scene. This office first put this land on public auction in July 2003. There were three development companies that were interested. However, the minimum bid was too high (B870 Mil) and FIDF cancelled the auction.

In November 2003, FIDF again announced sale of this land to the public via its website. Khunying Pajamarn was interested in the land for residential purposes and appointed her attorney submit a bid.

The FIDF appointed two committees to supervise the bidding process, the bid acceptance committee and the price opening committee. There were 4 potential bidders. But before each potential bidder can submit a bid, their qualification must be approved by these committees. One of the potential bidders was disqualified because their attorney who submitted the bid was not properly authorized. Khunying Pajamarn (offered B772 Mil) and two others are found to be qualified. The other two were publicly listed real estate developers, Noble Development Public Co. LTD. (offered B750 Mil), and House Public Co. LTD. (offered B730 Mil).

In December 2003, after the opening of the bidding price, the committee held a meeting to approve the sale to the highest bidder and the Land Sale and Purchased Agreement was signed with Khunyin Pajamarn.

Also in December 2003, Thaksin, as a husband, signed the consent form required to effect the registration of the land transfer. As part of the formality of any registration of real estate requiring spousal consent, he used his official identity card. It shows his official title as Prime Minister.

And this is important… Prior to putting down his signature, it was confirmed that the office of the Prime Minister is neither the office in charge of, nor has the authority to direct or supervise the FIDF. This is supported by the Supreme Court decision No. 4655/2533 which ruled that the FIDF is a separate and distinct juristic body independent from the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Thailand. It has its own rights and duty in accordance with laws and regulations within the boundary of its objectives.

Well, if law is law, it would appear that the sale was legally done by public auction, which means anyone can participate. I would think this includes a Prime Minister’s wife as well. It would also appear that the whole process was done properly and transparently. In the bidding clauses, the FIDF even reserved the right to not sell to any one, including the highest bidder. The transaction is not an abuse of power by the office of the Prime Minister, nor is it a conflict of interest as supported by the ruling of the Supreme Court's decision.

This case amplifies what I and many Thais already know. Unfortunately, we are doomed to live our lives under sensationalized rumors and highly charged fabrications where our politic is concern. It’s unlikely there are efforts on any one’s part to really inform the public the truth behind rumor based and politically motivated charges. I would think if there were any intention to corrupt or abuse power, it would have been much simpler and nothing to have someone else purchase the land. The Shinnawatra would not have personally involved themselves. Fact is, Khunying Pajamarn was informed she is qualified to participate and buy the land and Thaksin's office confirmed FIDF is a separate entity and not a part of the central administration. The sale and purchase was done in good faith with consideration paid and in accordance to the law......That is if Law is Law....

Here’s section 100 of the Organic Act on Counter Corruption Thaksin is found to be in violation of.

Section 100 Any State official shall not carry out the following acts:
(1) being a party to or having interest in a contract made with a Government agency where such State official performs duties in the capacity as State official who has the power to conduct supervision, control, inspection or legal proceedings;
(2) being a partner or shareholder in a partnership or company which is a party to a contract made with a Government agency where such State official performs duties in the capacity as a State official who has the power to conduct supervision, control, inspection or legal proceedings;
(3) being a concessionaire or continuing to hold a concession from the State, State agency, State enterprise or local administration or being a party to contract of a directly or indirectly monopolistic nature made with the State, a Government agency, State agency, State enterprise or local administration, or being a partner or shareholder in a partnership or company which is a concessionaire or a contractual party in such manner;
(4) being interested in the capacity as a director, counsel, representative, official or employee in a private business which is under supervision, control or audit of the State agency to which such State official is attached or where such State official performs duties in the capacity as State official, provided that the nature of the interest of the private business may be contrary to or inconsistent with public interest or the interest of the Government service or may affect the autonomy in the performance of duties of such State official.
The positions of State officials prohibited from carrying out the activities under paragraph one shall be prescribed and published in the Government Gazette by then N.C.C Commission.
The provisions of paragraph one shall apply to spouses of the State officials under paragraph two. For this purpose, the activities carried out by the spouse shall be deemed as the activities carried out by the State official.

If law is law and given the circumstance surrounding the land deal, I don’t see how or where Thaksin abused his power and violated the law."

Well you can decide for yourself you have brain and you have thoughts... another example: PM gives cooking lessons and get paid against the "law"....

Amazing Thailand... you can find something against anyone you want... from offending the king to cooking against the law...

As I have asked before, problem is not Thaksin, but what to do with all MPs of the oposition? Lock them all up as offending the King? Or find for each one something he/she did against the law?

"AOT to sue PAD for airport damage
By Watcharapong Thongrung,

The Nation
Published on December 12, 2008

Estimated daily loss of Bt64m

The board of Airports of Thailand (AOT) yesterday instructed the management to file a lawsuit against the People's Alliance for Democracy, seeking compensation for the damage suffered by six airports during the forced shutdown from November 25 to December 3.

Acting president Serirat Prasutanond said a preliminary damage survey showed that Suvarnabhumi had lost Bt50 million a day, Don Mueang Bt10 million and the other four airports a combined Bt4 million.

"The management has told us to sue the PAD and launch preventive measures. Preliminarily, the damage is Bt64 million a day plus lost opportunity cost. We're not sure about the exact damage claims as other losses must be incorporated, including the impacts on King Power and the airlines," Serirat said.

The lawsuit will be filed in the Civil Court by January, he said.

Due to the airport shutdowns, AOT agreed to waive rents on duty-free shop operators and pay compensation to operators and airlines. The exact amount is not known, Serirat said.

Earlier, the board of Thai Airways International also backed a plan for the national carrier to sue the PAD for about Bt20 billion.

Surachai Tharasithiong, permanent secretary of the Transport Ministry and THAI chairman, said yesterday that lawyers were still working on the lawsuit. He was unsure whether the filing could be completed this month.

Other than THAI, Finnair reported that damage from the closure of Suvarnabhumi was ค4 million (Bt185 million).

Prateep Wichittho, Suvarnabhumi Airport's deputy director of operations, said that after resuming operations on December 5, passenger and cargo traffic had dropped from the pre-closure period. On average, the number of passengers was 55,737, down 44.36 per cent from 100,000. Daily air cargo was 2,395 tonnes, down 28.83 per cent from 3,365 tonnes.

"Though all 105 airlines had resumed services, the number of flights averaged 496 a day - 362 international and 134 domestic, a 25.91-per-cent decrease from 714 flights earlier," he said.

The closure is expected to lead to huge damage to the tourism industry as the number of international arrivals is expected to fall to below 10 million. To lure back tourists, THAI and the Tourism Authority of Thailand are preparing more packages.

Surachai said rebooking from the European market is now returning to the pre-airport-closure period and booking from Asian markets is rebounding. He said THAI had resumed nearly all flights between Bangkok and Europe.

Tourism associations said it would help if the authorities were to visa fees and hotels agreed to offer room-rate discounts or other benefits such as a one-night free stay.

Surachai said THAI would soon borrow Bt19 billion from financial institutions as its liquidity was severely damaged by the airport closures. Of the total, while Bt14 billion is needed as internal cash flow for long-term use, another Bt3 billion is for urgent matters.

THAI's board yesterday also approved the sale of used aircraft engines and spare parts worth US$8.9 million (Bt312 million) and considered the extension of the lease of two aircraft by another nine years.

In the aftermath of the airport crisis, Civil Aviation Department director-general Chaisak Angkasuwan resigned as an AOT director, effective on December 1. "

You can guess what happened with this lawsuite in the Thai courts of "law"....

Demage is demage but of course the PAD is with Elvis... and others around that place...

Maybe all false, but at least one who claimed such... I am sure some relatives will soon come forward and complain of missing people. That is complain to who? If the police/army will shut them down we will never know... Clearly the forces here are not even, and those poor people, some with no education, may be scared or intimidated to speak up... but I believe this cannot be held back forever, and that more trouble will happen in Thailand - I hope I am wrong but the situation is not just for those hurt.
