Skytrain resumes full operation
========================

As the situation in Bangkok has returned to normal, both Silom and Sukhumvit routes skytrain will resume full operation from 6am to 12pm from today, BTS board member Anat Abhabhirom said on Saturday.

The services of skytrains were disturbed by the red-shirts rally inn Bangkok. Sometimes, the BTS had to close all stations for safety passengers and staff.

Even after the red-shirts rally at Ratchaprasong intersection was over, the BTS had provided service only from 6am to 8pm for safety reasons.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Sunday 30 May 2010 :-

CentralWorld to be rebuilt
====================

Rebuilding CentralWorld Department store, which was torched in last week's riots, will take about one year, says the engineer who supervised its construction.

Karoon Jantaransu said most of the damage to the building in the May 19 arson attack was at the Zen Department Store, which is part of the complex. About 10,000 square metres of the building, from the 1st floor to the 7th floor, was destroyed. Other parts of CentralWorld could be saved, although repairs would be needed, he said.

"The restoration and rebuilding work will take about one year," said Mr Karoon.

A 22-storey office building behind the ruined Zen building, part of the Centara Grand Hotel complex, is structurally sound, but part of the floor needs replacing.

If Mr T ever gets back in you will have a real opportunity to get used to early closing.

Valetta
I would like to think that the Bangkok middle/upper middle classes,who make up most of the opposition to the political aspirations of the red shirts, will negotiate a peaceful compromise through their respective political representatives.

After all the recent conflict between the red shirts and the army has not advanced the interests of either side,but if anything those who support the present government have suffered more,not in terms of lives lost,but economically.Hotels shops,and businesses,especially those that rely on tourists,have been hard hit,and there is not likely to be a recovery to normal trading for several months at the very least.

If some sort of settlement,including an election date,is not arrived at by the end of September,it is probable we will see a renewal of red shirt action similar to the last 2-3 months.That action would not need to be as extensive.A relatively few demonstrators would probably be enough to deter a large number of foreign tourists from visiting Thailand,especially if there was widespread violence.

Although the Thai business class would not like to make any significant concessions to the red shirts, I think they understand that the consequences of refusing could very well be a financially disastrous high season,and that would probably be far less palatable than making concessions.

Or will the red shirts with much of their leadership in prison remain peacefully at home?I rather doubt it.

I think any possibility of a compromise went up in smoke, so to say.

The arson perpetrated by the reds was terrorism. Time for the government to be strong.

Bros - Thank you! This thread gave me more information than any other news source during the latest Thai political crisis. I plan on coming into town around July 1 - what is the situation now in BKK? Back to normal, or close?
