Now I have you halfway, maybe I can let you make the rest of the journey also. As I already have said the most dangerous terrorrists come from Mekka and other places that are hardly poor (by any defenition). I will name some, like Amsterdam, Oklahoma, Madrid to name just the most noteworthy. On a rather less newsworthy scale you see fundamentalists everywhere. Christians in the USA, Nazi's in Europe and USA, Communists in USSR. If there is a belief or "-ism" then you will find fundamentalists. The same has been said by china Sailor (more or less).
So everywhere you go you will find them. Therefor the relation of POVERTY and FUNDAMENTALISM has to be investigated, but seems hardly a big factor in the whole thing. Since many of those countries have no poor people. They may have poorish people, but not everybody can be a CEO at Enron.
So the only thing you can say with some degree of safety is that there are a lot of fundamentalist that are poor, but that should hardly be surprising since there are so many of them (poor people). And since a lot of rich people also can be fundamentalists (Bin), money seems not realy be a serious item on the list of reasons one needs to become a fundamentalist.
So the statement : To stop terrorrism, we need to fight poverty. Is ludicrous at best. And an unreachable goal (even for Bill Gates) to say the least.
It is just Bush speak. Simple words spoken by a simple man to solve the worlds problems in his 4 more years.
If you believe it, then be my guest, but you can forget about my vote.

Afterall these elite poeple who have the best education, earnt the most money and have the abilities to reach the highest levels of society are all completely stupid and are therefore fundamentalists.
9/11 could only have been devised and planned by people of immese stupidity.
There is no fundamentalism in poor areas of Asia and africa.
And I take on board your suggestion that I am stupid, so I have just procured an AK47 and a pair of clogs and intend to become a terroist.

It seems that you are not reading my posts either. I did not say fight poverty, there will always be poor people in society. I was talking empowerment.
To enpower the poor there needs to be a strong middle-class. The middle-class (or Merchant Class if you read Edmund Burke) becomes the vehicle that a poor person, who is motovated and works hard, can use to better his life and/or that of his children.
Bill Gates was doing handouts, that does not work.
Compare Malaysia and PI. Basically of the same ethnic group and countries that possess great natural resources. On independence Malaysia chose to build its middle-class and provide a vehicle for wealth to be distributed to those who would work for it through a free-market mechanisim. The PI chose to concentrate wealth in the elite, ship out the educated/skilled as OFWs (as they were threats to the elite's control) and pump handouts to the poor to keep them in line.
Compare the two countries now, which one is a stable market based economy and which one is near bankrupt and is a constant state of turmoil??
I do not agree with the neo-cons and the 'Manifest Destiny of Democracy' but I also do not agree with the socio-liberal concept of we are responsible for all of our brothers...
Seems like most of the people on this thread are choosing one of the above two options to subscribe to and are not using their heads!

Well the policeman in charge at the G8 meeting has said that he will arrest anyone ''prepared to use violence or break the law'' to achieve their ends. Putting Bush and Blair behind bars for a very long time will be a good start. Cut the head off (or at least the mouthpiece) and the monster dies.
