Provincial and regional leaders, the ones expected to follow policy, are the ones I was referencing, and you will find that these 'leaders'' backgrounds are far more mundane...

To further underline my original opinion:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3458421a14955,00.html

Yes, alegedly she did not die from Avian FLu, but some unspecified fever with flu-like symptoms (!), but the attitude of the father, expert farmer that he is, sends shivers up and down my spine:

"We had dead chickens before and nobody has ever got sick because of that. So I thought it's okay"

Oh, by all means, there's no risk at all. Hygiene, anyone? Common sense, anyone?

Bloody illiterate peasantry!

No daffy that does not underline your original opinion, your origional opinion was that the govermental leaders of china are uneducated sheep herders.

Now you highlighting a very poor article about a (supposedly) uneducated chicken farmer.

Well I guess there is a connection in box land.

OK folks,

I guess that Rumsfeld had roped the Indonesian Government into his consipracy:

Probe on whether other animals are spreading virus

JAKARTA - INDONESIA'S human bird flu outbreak is puzzling experts because several victims do not work or live around poultry, prompting an investigation into whether other animal hosts are to blame for the disease's spread.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the H5N1 strain of bird flu that has killed more than 60 people in South-east Asia since 2003 is transmitted to humans primarily through direct contact with infected birds or their droppings.

But Indonesian Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari has said there is so far no evidence of most of the country's victims catching the virus through close contact with, or eating, the meat of infected birds.

'We can only suspect that those infected contracted the virus through the droppings or contact with the saliva of infected birds or fowl,' said Mr Suyono, a spokesman for the Health Ministry.

Only the latest confirmed bird flu death, a young man from nearby Bogor who died in hospital last month but was confirmed as a bird flu victim only this week, had been staying in a house where several chickens had died of suspected bird flu.

Mr Suyono says it is a mystery how several other people confirmed to have bird flu in Indonesia - three of whom have also died - contracted H5N1 when they lived in and around urban Jakarta, far from a poultry farm. Indonesia has recorded seven cases of bird flu, with 28 others being investigated including nine suspicious deaths, since July.

'Worldwide, more than 80 per cent of infections can be traced back to contact with poultry,' said Indonesia's WHO representative Georg Petersen, saying the agency was not yet concerned that animals such as cats may be spreading the disease.

'In some countries, there have been reports of animals such as tigers and cats being infected...but so far we have no report of anyone contracting the virus from animals other than poultry,' he said. -- AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

This is significant because if it has passed to another host (such as a pig), it idicates a mutation pattern that could result in a human virus...

The OZ Foreign Minister says do not panic:

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/conditions/11/01/apec.pandemic.plans.ap/index.html

Of course since OZ is not on any migratory bird routes and has no land borders with any other countries, they could close their borders and wait out the pandemic.

I guess I wouldn't be worried if I was in that situation either...

jesus sailor what are you worried for, aren't you suposed to be bloody ex special forces hard as f*** anyway?

H5N1 was first discovered in the UK (and that was in a chicken not a wild bird, god only knows how long it was in wild birds and has always been to this day) over 46 years ago and it hasn't mutated into something easily transferable after all that time yet people who don't know any better are freaking, f*** it's was first recorded in a humand in 1997, 8 years ago, the only reason people are shitting it now is down to media scaremongering thanks to certain influential people and groups not least the WHO.

An influenza empidemic will happen for sure if you look through history they happen on average every 10-30 years but for doctors to come out and suggest it will be because of this virus H5N1 have vested interests, an epidemic wiht deaths anything like the WHO estimates really are so unlikely if you worried about everything like that you'd never leave your bedroom or eat any food.
Most people simply have no idea the level to which their thoughts and beliefs are manipulated.

There are so many differences between the circumstances of today and the flu epidemic of 1918.

BL,

Did not say I was worried, I was in Guangzhou during SARS. I just stayed away from sick people .

I was trying to highlight the stupidity of Mr. Downing's statement when he was addressing ASEAN nations that make up 'ground zero' for a possible pandemic.

As for the differences between today and 1918, I think SARS demonstrated the effectiveness of disease transmission these days.

Actually BL, it sounds to me like you are 'whistling in the dark'.....

There are a lot of differences between 1918 and today - most of them making the spreading of a disease easier.

In all fairness, most of our advances would also make containing a disease easier than in 1918, but unfortunately, when it comes to countries like China, we are dealing with a 1918 culture, and 2005 transference opportunities.
