Mr Alan
Apparently Thaksin's party won the election, but there may be some seats that will need re-elections because there were too many "no" votes cast according to the election laws, even if only one candidate was running. So it is not clear yet whether his party can elect him as PM yet.

The opposition party is saying that the election is a fraud, or that the ballets were not kept secret, or whatever suits them at the moment, primarily because they lost (or they did not register enough "no" votes to prevent Thaksin from eventually being named PM).

Meanwhile, Thaksin (who is a billionaire and is probably tired of the BS by now) would like to bow out as PM gracefully, but does not want to do so under any cloud of scandal, and there does not appear to be any logical person to replace him.

Personally, I am surprised that the baht has not taken a beating on the currency markets, but it is not over yet.

UPDATE:

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra bowed out of the political battle last night, declaring in a nationwide telecast that he would not form the next government. ''I will not to accept the prime ministership when the new parliament convenes in 30 days,'' he said.

Somkid now frontrunner for PM's job

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has emerged as the most likely person to take over as prime minister, overtaking former parliament speaker Pokin Polakul, a highly-placed source in Thai Rak Thai said.

Hey!

Does this all mean that "social moral crusade" is over too and we can all have fun like we did 6 years ago?

Yurune
Why?..There will be no change to the ruling party, in fact they may just end up with a greater majority....and like yeah.... Thaksin really will have no influence behind the scenes.....

Get real.

Yes, all the TV Stations broadcast K. Taksin's speech. Teary eyed.

But Yurune makes a great point of course: he will continue to be a mentor to the new TRT puppet--excuse me, I mean prime minister. I believe the papers today even report that certain meetings will still go on at Taksin's home. So... Don't think anyone's going to be opposing his plans. And that's also a good point about this move encompassing more Thai's.

Kind of like when Obi Wan Konobi died but got stronger when invisible. Though maybe not the same side of the force.

However all of the mid-class Thai in my office this morning are upset with these developments, if that's any indication of anything. Maybe they'll be more upsets in the future--the people have tasted a faint whiff of something political and not everyone's satisfied and they're trying to think. Hopefully just more watchdog efforts on the politicians, if possible. Hard to say if anything Can develop.
