Yo Guys, My wife just called me at work and is freking out after talking with her mom and reading the internet. Our trip is less than a month away. is there any weather prediction on when this rain/flooding will end? thanks in advance for any updates, atl Yo atl, How long can you tread water Do you remember the old John Cash song "How high's the water mama", Well it's 2 feet high and rising. If you see a guy building a big ark and collection animals two at a time, you might be in Thailand. If you're going to take a long trip in a taxi, take seasick pills. How high's the water mama, well it's 3 feet high and rising. Do you own flippers and a mask with snorkle Do you know how to row a boat How high's the water mama, it's 4 feet high and rising. The gogo dancers are weating swimsuits and water wings How high's the water mama, it's 5 feet high and rising. The rainy season is supposed to be winding down but mother nature might be a freind to the ghost of Cobra Swamp and they might be massing their energy to pay Thailand back for what they did to the old temple and cemetary. shamas, funny...I especially liked the "go-go girls in water wings" line.... I know this will sound self centered due to the devestation but I would think Jat-u-Jak is finito for awhile (was gonna do all of my christmas shopping the first weekend there). I also heard rayong was pretty much screwed (I had 4 or 5 days in samet planned)..I could amend that pretty easy if other beaches are OK. the internet weather report speculated it should be over by the end of the month...but then there is the aftermath at the businesses and beaches. What are some of you guys on holiday (gymmcgovern) or living there experiencing? thanks, atl PS. Even if the coup was a raging shootout and the downpour reached biblical levels I would be on the plane without the slightest hesitation..its the old lady

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 13 October 2006 :- Floods to continue for weeks ====================== The weather is improving in the Bangkok and surrounding regions, but flooding in the Chao Phraya River basin will well into next month as the run-off moving south is still rising, Royal Irrigation Department (RID) chief Samart Chokkanapitak said on Friday. As of Friday, the official death toll from floods in the past month rose to 47. Damage from the flood was estimated at 305.3 million baht ($8.14 million), with more than 8,000 homes damaged, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. Delivering the bad news before boarding a helicopter to inspect flooding in the Chao Phraya River basin region - Bangkok plus the provinces of Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Sing Buri, Chai Nat, Uthai Thani, and Nakhon Sawan, Mr. Samart said he was concerned that the flooding would stay longer than previously expected--at least until mid-November. Floodwaters in the central plains will not recede until late next month when the situation is expected to return to normal, he said. The rising floodwaters in Nakhon Sawan are overflowing into nearby Uthai Thani. Many areas along the Chao Phraya River, from Nakhon Sawan to parts of Bangkok and Samut Prakan are now in worrisome situations. Suphan Buri, and Lop Buri could not be spared from floods as well, he said. He advised all communities in the at-risk areas to be prepared to deal with flooding during this period. The RID chief said the department is looking for more tracts of land available in the interior countryside areas far from the Chao Phraya River in order to divert excess water from the country's central waterway. Senior officials are scheduled to focus on flood responses during a special meetng Saturday. Special attempts are being made to local low-lying areas which are still capable of absorbing water so that they can be used for water retention during this critcal period.

Report from The Nation dated Saturday 14 October 2006 :- Expert warns of rainstorms' return ========================== A climate expert yesterday expressed concern that a pressure ridge responsible for rainstorms over the upper part of the country would return to Bangkok during high-tide between October 23 and 25. Initially, it was forecast that the pressure ridge was going to head southward. "If it is going southward at its normal speed of 100 kilometres per hour, it should have already reached Songkhla. But from our observations, it's not that way," said Anond Snidvongs, director of the Southeast Asia START (System for Analysis Research and Training) regional office. He pointed out that a cold air mass from China was currently colliding with the pressure ridge. "If the pressure ridge can't push ahead and move southward, it is going to return to Bangkok and that may happen during the high-tide period," Anond said. Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department director-general Anucha Mokkhavesa said relevant officials were closely monitoring the situation in Bangkok's Lat Krabang, Nong Chok, Lat Phrao, Min Buri, Khan Na Yow and Prawet districts. "If there are heavy downpours, floods may hit these districts," he said.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 18 October 2006 :- West of city 'needs to be on flood alert' - Diverted water set to arrive late this month ================================================================= The western area of Bangkok needs to be on alert for flooding as water diverted from the Chao Phraya river in Ayutthaya is expected to arrive there late this month, an informed source said. According to the source, the Irrigation Department reported to an anti-flood meeting at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration yesterday that river waters will be diverted to canals in Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district and other canals in downstream provinces to protect inner Bangkok from flooding. The high volume of water from the canals is expected to reach areas in western Bangkok, including Thawi Watthana and Bang Khun Thian districts, late this month. Citing information from the Irrigation Department and the Drainage and Sewerage Department, Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said the high tides during Oct 23-25 would not bring such severe floods to Bangkok as had earlier been predicted. Besides, there would be less rainfall as the winter season will have set in by that time.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Sunday 22 October 2006 :- High tides 'could bring flood chaos' ========================== Bangkok officials are monitoring river levels and filling sandbags in preparation for tomorrow's rising seas Water management officials yesterday warned Bangkok residents to brace for possible flood chaos during the high-tide periods from tomorrow ( 23 October ) until Thursday ( 26 October ) and on Nov 7-9. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Department of Water Resources and the Royal Irrigation Department are monitoring the water level of the Chao Phraya river to determine its possible impact on the capital. The BMA has prepared one million sandbags to reinforce the city flood wall to cope with the higher level, said Chanchai Vitoonpanyakij, BMA's Drainage and Sewerage Department deputy chief. Siripong Hungspreug, Water Resources Department chief, said he hoped more water could be diverted from the Chao Phraya river into farm land upstream to keep the water level low in sections that cut through the capital. Officials predicted at their meeting on Friday that the water level in the river would rise to 2.4 metres above mean sea level during the high-tide period in November, or 20cm above the level during the high-tide period that starts tomorrow. Bangkok's flood wall is 2.5 metres high at the lowest point. This would be increased to cope with the rising water level, said Mr Chanchai. An irrigation official involved in flood prevention operations said the volume of water diverted into farm land upstream had reached saturation point. This would add to the flood threat the capital will face in early November when runoff from Nakhon Sawan reached Bangkok during the high-tide period. The water volume in the Chao Phraya river in Nakhon Sawan last week broke a 60-year record, with more than 5,000 cubic metres flowing downstream per second. Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 26 October 2006 :- Floods inundate Bangkok riverside ========================== Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin on Wednesday visited a community flooded by waters from the Chao Phraya River in Bang Phlad district during the high tide period. The governor distributed non-prescription drugs to people living in the flood-affected community inundated by the overflowing river. He asked people living along the Chao Phraya River to be on alert for high tides through the end of this month. The peak water level of the Chao Phraya River here was measured at 2.19 metres, two centimetres higher than Tuesday and close to the level forecast by the Department of Drainage and Sewerage at 2.20 metres, said Mr. Apirak. The governor also assigned officials and medical teams to visit residents of low-lying areas along seven riverside districts. Deputy Bangkok Governor Bannasopit Mekwichai ordered emergency service officials to reinforce walls with piled-up sandbags near many piers in Phranakhon district. Mobile toilet units have provided service at 30 flooded areas and health officials were sent to look after the elderly stranded in their houses. Royal Irrigatioon Department director-general Samart Chokanapitak said that the water level in the Chao Phraya River in Nakhon Sawan's provincial seat was measured at 4,545 cubic metres per minute on Wednesday morning, 250 cubic metres per minute less than Tuesday. The Hydrographic Department predicted that the water level in the Chao Phraya River at the Royal Thai Navy Headquarters will reach 2.20 metres on Thursday morning.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 27 October 2006 :- Bangkok could be underwater in 15 years ================================ Bangkok and its surrounding provinces will be underwater within the next 15 to 20 years unless barriers are constructed along the capital's Chao Phrya River, the National Disaster Warning Centre warned in a report on Monday. Smith Thammasaroj, chairman of the centre, said that Thailand's capital faces a watery future thanks to global warming that will lead to higher sea tides and heavier rainfall. Bangkok, Thailand's capital since 1782, is connected to the Gulf of Thailand by the Chao Phrya River, which flows down from the country's northern region. "The way to prevent the situation is to start building a permanent water barrier along the Chao Phrya River to prevent water overflowing into Bangkok and its adjacent provinces," said Smith. Smith, who is also in charge of the country's tsunami early-warning system, made a name for himself in Thailand as the first meteorologist to warn authorities of the possibility of the Andaman Sea coast being hit by tidal waves, years before it actually happened on December 26, 2004, claiming for than 5,000 lives along the Thai coast.
