Can you specify what practices he has followed that are "totally alien to -- or at least illegal -- in the West "?
If you are talking about corruption - how come there is not even the slightest hint of corruption charges against him ?
If you are talking about successfully "lobbying" or "influencing" Government policies - then no way is this "alien to or illegal in the West".

Well, at least on one point, gotta agree with PoopScoop: the Thai eduation system is half assed. Been following my TGF through her attempt to finish mattayon 6 (years 7-12 of grade school) and I am very unimpressed by what I see. American grade schools are better in just about every respect (and they even fail relative to grade schools in other Western countries). But some education is better than none, and at least my TGF now knows that hydrogen and oxygen make water, and that there are things called atoms. Though she did ask me, somewhat ironically in retrospect, while we were flying to Phuket just before the tsunami, "teelakja, what make ocean stay down?" She hadn't quite got the concept of gravity yet, but I was impressed that her mind had turned on enough to begin to ask questions like that. And it does appear she will get her G.E.D. next month, at long last!
Same with the universtity system. We're also in the process of getting my TGF's younger brother through the university system. He's currently in year 3 at an intermediately ranked university. Not even close to U.S. standards, frankly. But it's still a uni degree, and of value in Thailand.
Have also talked with lots of Thai's in their late 20's and early 30's who have gone overseas (Europe and America) for undergraduate and graduate degrees, and they also agree with PoopScoop's assessment of the Thai uni system. Of course, they still love Thailand, and the ladies are still the cutest, lol!

That just makes you sound very, very foolish.
I was going to quote from some of the many web sites detailing examples of what you're asking about, but frankly couldn't be bothered. OK, here's a tiny hint of what you so obviousy don't know...
"With the National Elections just one week away, Khun Thaksin has been found guilty by the National Counter Corruption Commission of 'Hiding his assests for dishonest purposes', October 10, 2000"
In fact, if it weren't for a (well-documented) night-time visit by some army officers to one of the judges on the commission, Khun Thaksin would not be PM.
Try using a search engine. Just look for 'Thaksin' and 'corruption'. You'll (obviously) be very surprised.
There are also a couple of excellent books on the subject. I would recommend that you read 'Thaksin: The Business of Politics in Thailand', by Phongpaichit Pasuk & Chris Baker, ISBN: 9749575555, available at all good book shops, and some bad ones, and then perhaps we can talk some more.

Since you have such a wealth of information could you please enlighten me as to some instances where it has been proved that he used corrupt means to build up his business prior to becoming P.M. ?

Some days ago you called for a truce because you were getting the verbal battering of your life - BUT now that you think you have some support from the recent posts, you have popped your head out of your hole like the COWARD that you are.
Incidentally yesterday the Sub-Way restarted it's services and about 95,000 people travelled on it from 6 A.M to 6 P.M.
Maybe you should retalk to the knowledgeable Thais who told you that "most Thais do not want to travel on the Sub-Way".
