You are absolutely right. Even radical Palestinian groups estimate the 1947 Arab population of that area at roughly one million. Between 150,000 and 250,000 remained in what became the state of Israel and 750,000 were "displaced" by the Arab attacks that followed the creation of Israel.
It's absurd the Palestinian refugee problem has lasted for more than 50 years. It's the only place on earth where refugee status has become hereditary for three generations. The Palestinians are generic Arabs and could adapt to life anywhere in the Middle East if they don't want to stay in Israel (Israel now has about 1.1 million citizens of Arab descent, or roughly the same percentage as when the country was founded.)
Millions upon millions of people all over the world were displaced in the wake of WWII. By 1952, almost all had been resettled with the notable exception of the Palestinians. If Arab countries had allowed Palestinians to freely settle and become citizens, the problem would have been solved. In their attempt to push the Jews into the sea, the Arabs fought numerous wars and lost every one. Time for the Palestinians to stop dreaming about the villages where their grandfathers were born and get on with their lives.
This relates to terrorist bombings in Bali and everywhere else since destroying Israel as a Jewish state is always given as one of the reasons for the actions by the terrorists themselves. Because the Israelis fight back, the Islamo-fascists prefer to bomb tourist restaurants in Bali.

In this case I have to disagree. The stated aims of JI has nothing to do with Israel but is related to the re-establishment of the Islamic Caliphate that existed in SEA prior to the arrival of the infidels in the early part of last millennium.
Prior to the influence of the Indians, Chinese, Thai, and later Europeans there was a Islamic state that included most of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Southern Thailand, Brunei, and the southern islands of the Philippines. JI wants to reclaim this land and drive out all of the infidels.
If you check out any of the literature on the JI you will find this clearly stated. Most intel agencies (except the US and Oz for obvious political reasons) believe that any connection between JI and Al Queda is one of convenience and not of substance...

I was speaking in very general sense about all Islamic groups which deliberately choose soft targets. It would have been more case-specific to write, "Because the Indonesian police and army fight back, the Islamo-fascists prefer to bomb tourist restaurants in Bali." Of course, JI and all other militant Islamic groups see non-believers as their blood enemies and are probably trying to inflict as much damage on Bali's Hindu community as they can. JI, just like al-Qaida and the insurgents in Iraq, wants to create so much chaos that it will allow for the establishment of a Caliphate. Hindus aren't "people of the book" and therefore aren't extended the very limited tolerance granted Christians and Jews under "dhimmi,"the Prophet's code for dealing with subjugated peoples. The brand of Islam in which JI, Al-Qaida, Hamas, Hezbollah and other such groups believe holds that it isn't a moral offense to kill Hindus, Buddhists and other "idol worshippers." Under strict sharia law, they must convert to Islam or die.

In a presidential statement, the council expressed its
condolences for the victims and their families. The bombings at three crowded restaurants on Saturday killed 22 people and wounded 104.
¶ ``The Security Council reaffirms that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,'' the statement said.
¶ After the statement was read, Indonesia's U.N. Ambassador Rezlan Ishar Jenie told the council in a speech that his government would not change course in its fight against terrorism and toward
achieving an ``open, democratic society.''
¶ ``We will not be blackmailed or scared away from our efforts to enhance development,'' Jenie said. ``We will not succumb to terrorism or any other organized crime. We will continue to cooperate with other nations who are working hard to develop a comprehensive response to terrorism.''
No one has claimed responsibility for the bombings, but
suspicion immediately fell on the al-Qaida linked regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah, which has also been blamed for the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

You have my vote. I have nothing planned, but if I had, I would NOT be scared away. And our news told me that no tickets were cancelled. So I think I can say that atleast the dutch will still go to Bali.
But maybe I should confess to an ulterior motive. About 60 years ago, this was OUR island and we want it back! We are sending our most fundamentalist tourists over there. And they carry backpacks! So be warned!

How did I get to the number of 5 million? I don't google my answers/posts, so it is all from my mind. I know there were at some point in time 2 million palestinians in Jordan alone. So I calculated from there that there should be around 5 million all over the area. The only trouble was that I did not know if that number was a 1950 number or a 1990 number. If you are correct and I have no reason to doubt that, it must have been the 1990 number.
All that said, it does not realy matter if there were 1 million or 5 million. The fact is it was a disaster for a very big number of people. And they got f***ed by everybody,..... except the hutu's, but that was because they did not know there were palestinians available to be f***ed.
