Well at least I agree with one thing Mr Downer is probably the most stupid ignoramus ever to be elected into the Australian government.

China sailors comments regarding closing off the Aus borders is stupid,, dont you know that the Aus coast line is only a few hundred kilometres from Papua New Guinea, Timor ( half shared with Indonesia) Soloman islands etc. We find thousands of their fishermen I on our coast line every year. It is unlikely the USA navy let alone the Aus navy could patrol a coast line as large as our (most respected estimate 25,760km) This is the third largest coast line of any country and exceeds the USA coast line and that of China.
Anyway us aussies drink enough beer to kill any bloody flu.
regards.

BL,

Did not say I was worried,

As for the differences between today and 1918, I think SARS demonstrated the effectiveness of disease transmission these days.

Not sure what you mean by this

Actually BL, it sounds to me like you are 'whistling in the dark'.....

Exactly, the point is nobody knows, apart from a load of people with vested interests telling you they know. As I said if you worried about everything that COULD happen nobody would join the army and then old dubya really would be in trouble.

If you want to worry about something regarding your health start worrying about toxic causes of cancer which the science establishment will not admit and and just exactly what is in the food you pick up at the supermarket.

There are a lot of differences between 1918 and today - most of them making the spreading of a disease easier.

In all fairness, most of our advances would also make containing a disease easier than in 1918, but unfortunately, when it comes to countries like China, we are dealing with a 1918 culture, and 2005 transference opportunities.

So china has the same culture as 1918, so they are in the 4th year of a world war fought in trenches, thats incredible I never new that.

I would have to suggest you educate yourself on the uniques circumstances of 1918 before spouting off more shit you don't understand.

If you don't know the difference between 'culture' and 'events' then I would reverse your advice right back at you - How did you so eloquently put it - "educate yourself before spouting off more shit you don't understand."

,

I see so the first world war wasn't a product of culture then, well you better tell the Germans not to worry about nationalism, it's wasn't responsible for anything, I bet that'll be a weight of there minds, they can go back to being a happy go lucky people.

The 1918 pandemic had nothing to do which culture, it had everything to do with cirucumstance and event, the major ones being no antibiotics, the 1st world war and much greater poverty. But if you want to show me your 'education' daffney then please do so, exactly how did the 'culture' in 1918 percipitate an avian flu pandemic?

Anyway, I do hope you do try because i'm glad this is so obvioulsy causing you unease afterall, I seem to remember in a thread a while ago you asked just why should you care 'one bit' about a poor stupid African. Now, of course you're having to ask, or perhaps just hope for a reason why a poor chinese chicken farmer should care 'one bit' about your fat stinking carcass,

One of these days.....

Like I said, but I'd just be repeating myself, and your original 'suggestion'. It's clear, though, that any further discussion would be a waste of time. It seems everyone else is getting, except for you (no surprise there, though).

Errr BL...

Flu is caused by a virus, antibiotics do not kill virus.

Fact is, a virus is very difficult to kill without injuring the host. At most a flu vaccination will mitigate the effects of the flu, not fully prevent it....

Drink cheap Thai whiskey.

That will kill anything, even the ubiquitous virus.

Most deaths in 1918 as now that are due to influenza are not caused by the primary infection but by secondary infection mostly bacteria and fungal infections which can cause things such as pnuemonia due to the weakened state the body is left in after Influenza. Antibiotics and the antifungals available today that were not available in 1918 would therefore allow many to recover from these secondary infections that couldn't in 1918.

Also whilst a virus is dificult to kill the opposite is also true that if a virus is so deadly as too quickly eliminate it's host it quicky wipes itself out too.

Great answer

BTW Daffy I spoke to the Chinese last week and apparently there gonna make sure you get H5N1, they didn't like you anyway but that sheep herder line was the last straw. Those chicken farmers are gonna refuse to report their chicken deaths all because of you.

PS Daffy I have missed our little our chats, don't be a stranger now.
