Apparently some do not understand. Thaksin won the election (his TRT party has won a majority of seats in the legislature). But Thaksin has decided not run for PM and to hand over the PM job to his protégé.
That does not mean that everything will be exactly the same, but I would not expect any major changes on issues. After all, most people had a problem with Thaksin's perceived corruption issues, not necessarily with his policies as PM.

Personally, while Thanksin will remain as leader of TRT, I feel that TRT will splinter and fracture after this, and once Thaksin is no longer in the spotlight, the cohesive force that he was, which kept the factions together, will have dissolved as well.
It won't be an overnight disappearance of TRT, but the vultures are picking at the corpse already, and the corpse is making deals, independent of the party, already.

Thaksin now gone...as of yesterdayafternoon, held a last cabinet meeting, and left saying from now on his deputy will be the Interim PM.
I have to admit while it's nice to see him get his come uppance, I can help think that none of this will benifit Thailand in the short to mid term.
I also cannot understand the ego of a man that rich to wanna go through all this shit.....better rich and anonymous in my book.
Addition: the new Interim PM is Police General Chidchai.....but it was announced that any really important decisions will still be taken by Dr Thaksin. Gotta free himself up for some major 'wen kaam' I'd guess.
At least the new guy is a policeman, so at least we know he'll be honest.....

Re: your question about why would anyone with this kind of money behave this way. After all, if you're rich, why not leave a better political legacy too? A very well connected associate of mine made the statement to me last year that it wasn't about the money anymore. He said, and this is the thing that he found scary, it was now about the power trip with Thaksin. He found that scary, because he said it was a one way ticket to megalomania and intolerance. When Thaksin starting holding up the those little signs to tell the press to f*** off during interviews, the disdain and conceit he was showing was unbefitting someone in his position. His friends in the press abandoned him after that last straw...

An interesting election result. Vote for PM Thaksin or vote no and the winner was someone other than Thaksin or the "no" vote. The winner was simply appointed just after a full country wide election. Interesting. Interesting.
How long will this last.
