Quote: from Gyaos on 4:00 pm on April 8, 2006 An interesting election result. Vote for PM Thaksin or vote no and the winner was someone other than Thaksin or the "no" vote. The winner was simply appointed just after a full country wide election. Interesting. Interesting. How long will this last.
In a Parliamentary system, voters elect local representatives, and do not directly vote for the Prime Minister. Then the Parliament elects a PM. The opposition parties, knowing that they could not win a majority, asked its supporters to vote no (instead of voting for opposition party candidates) in order to prevent the TRT candidates from getting the minimum 20% of their constituencies in order to be elected. Thaksin's TRT party emerged from the recent election with 347 of the 500 seats that must be filled for Parliament to be legally constituted, so TRT has the power to elect whomever they want to be PM. Presumably, Thaksin could have been reelected PM by Parliament if he really wanted to, but he has decided to retire. A re-election for the empty Parliament seats that did not get 20% of the vote (and the one seat where a candidate was “de-selected”) will be held later this month. The Election Commission will determine the legal and constitutional implications as to whether Parliament can convene to elect a PM before all 500 seats are filled.

Anti-Thaksin leaders may be charged Police have ordered the top five anti-Thaksin leaders to report for questioning on April 20 on charges of threatening national security. The case is separate from possible lese majeste charges against publisher Sondhi Limthongkul. Mr Sondhi has been ordered to be questioned next Monday, but has asked that the session be put off until next month. According to police spokesman Pol Gen Ajirawid Subarnbhesaj, Mr Sondhi and four other core leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy have received summonses to report by next Thursday for questioning, and to hear possible cahrges. The most prominent people summoned are Mr Sondhi and Maj-Gen Chamlong Srimuang. Three other PAD leaders are included in the order. "The police will carefully consider this case before taking any action," said Pol Gen Ajirawid. According to government-run Thai News Agency, Interior Minister Kongsak Wantana defended his move to issue a warrant to investigate five anti-Thaksin protest leaders for blocking roads in Bangkok for a period of weeks. Air Chief Marshal Kongsak said officials wanted to interrogate the demonstration leaders over their action to block the public roadways while protesting at Makawan Bridge and Siam Paragon Shopping Mall. The minister did not identify the leaders by name but said all five protest leaders must report to the authorities for questioning on April 20. "This is not an intimidation. It is the duty of police under the law. If the accused could prove they were harassed, they could sue the authorities back," the minister said. BREAKING NEWS - Bangkok Post 13th April Not good ?

Where was the 'duty' they claim to have to uphold, when the demonstrations were actually taking place, and police action could have resolved the traffic problems? Yep, this is far from over - what we are experiencing now are not so discreete reprisal through TRT and sympathizers against those behind the fal of their hero - then again, Thaksin isn't really 'gone' yet, now is he? Let's see how all of this looks 30-60 days from now, which is the normal time frame for all important matters to be forgotten.

the funny part: "on charges of threatening national security" since when is the traffic flow in front of Siam Paragon a National Security issue? Sometimes I really wonder if those guys in the government or working for them (Police, EC, etc.) really know what they're talking about.
