What will happen today?

A cheeky analysis of the current three-pronged showdown between the PAD, government and Army.
The danger of writing the following is that the whole piece can look very silly after two hours. Thailand's political situation is not dictated by just one or two men, and as I'm typing this (Friday, 11 am), coup rumours are still coming from left, right and centre. The only thing we know is the three key players _ the People's Alliance for Democracy, Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and Army chief Anupong Paochinda _ are playing the cards as they come at them and none of trio can predict what's going to happen next.
The PAD has said "All in". The political movement was dealt a bad hand (decreasing support, conflicts with former allies, nightly ambushes and so on) but all the chips had gone into the betting pot to provoke Anupong and Somchai into a final winner-takes-all showdown.
Meanwhile, Anupong "checked" (deciding not to bet now but with the option to call or raise later). He basically chose to sit on the fence for just a moment, hence the polite requests for Somchai to dissolve the House and the PAD to end its protests.
Somchai "called" the PAD's bluff. I will never fold, the prime minister told a nationwide audience in a TV address Wednesday night. Why should I? I'm holding a very good hand. Mine is a government elected by the people and for the people.
Good hand, yes, best one, no. And Somchai, while convinced that the PAD was holding weak cards, cannot be sure that Anupong was laughing inside and ready to pounce. This is why the prime minister only "called" (declaring a state of emergency) but did not "raise" (it was a very half-hearted, unusual state of emergency featuring peace negotiators and virtually leaving the Army out of the crucial operation).
Well, as a very poor amateurish poker player, that's as close as I can get to explaining the current situation. It appears to have come down to who blinks first between Somchai and Anupong, after a suicidal PAD threw in all its stakes and thus turned what should have been a normal round into one that will decide who goes home with all the money or empty-handed.
With the Suvarnabhumi Airport far more important than Government House and having to be reopened as soon as possible, pressure is on Somchai and Anupong and it's interesting to see who will be the next guy to say "All in".
That, as far as Somchai is concerned, means a crackdown.
As for Anupong, it means the thing he has repeatedly said with his poker face that he would never do.

Unsettled Army situation keeps PM in Chiang Mai
Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat will remain in Chiang Mai for the time being as the army situation is "unsettled," Government deputy spokesperson Suparat Nakbunnam said Friday.
Prime Minister Somchai has no schedule yet to return to Bangkok, Suparat said, adding the decision to stay in Chiang Mai fro the time being is as part of security measures.
"It is mainly because the army situation is still unsettled. And from now on, PM's schedules will be confidential. Reporters will not be informed of his schedules," she said.
Somchai has chosen to stay in Chiang Mai after returning from Peru as anti-government protesters seized Don Muang and Suvarnbhumi airports. He declared state of emergency on both airports on Thursday from state-run NBT station in Chiang Mai.
In the programme, Somchai dismissed an increasing call from the situation monitoring panel under the Army for him to dissolve the House.
On Thursday, the situation in the capital was extremely tense as coup rumours spread after the premier shot down calls by the army to step down to solve the political turmoil.
The embattled premier will chair Friday a teleconference with governors and senior officials nationwide from Chiang Mai's City Hall.

You don't know how much I hope this mess will end up in a disaster large enough for the big players involved in my line of work to at last decide to get out of Thailand so we can all move to otherwise stable and business friendly Hong Kong. But unfortunately I doubt it will will work out that way so easily. Quite happy I took the family in holidays to Paris before they closed the airport. Have a few friends who wished they had a better timing...

It's a marker on airline route maps you see red lines on the map shoing their route and the destinations are maked with dots or small squares. The hubs and important destinations are maked with red dots and code share or smaller destinations are maked with smaller black or blue dots.
Towns that are not the airline destinations are not shown or vith a tiny circle.
Have a look at an airline route map and I think you understand.

The reason PAD is blocking the airport is because they heard dafty was coming back on another sex tour.
This was reported to me by a high ranking Thai Army Officer friend of mine.

Well, back in the USA... after being stuck at Narita airport for two days... just my luck... why couldn't I be stucked in BKK instead?!? 
This is going to take a while.... well, will reschedule... seems the tourists industry got a hard blow and will take a year or more to recover. But I hope this will mean lower prices and/or better Bhat to US$ (or any other currency) rates

Thailand has made the list of the Top 20 Most Dangerous Places as compiled by the Telegraph newspaper of London.
The latest edition of the list puts Thailand as the seventh most-dangerous spot for travellers behind Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, South Africa, Somalia and Sudan. Thailand is said to be more dangerous than Colombia and Haiti at the moment.
It justifies the Thai spot on the list because of "major political demonstrations and a temporary state of emergency" at the two Bangkok airports.
It also cites the continuing demonstrations around Government House, the Cambodian-Thai fighting on the bordefr, and "civil unrest and frequent attacks" in the deep South.
The British "Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to these areas," the newspaper said.
