I read in the Bangkok Post this morning that a 45 year old Japanese tourist was stabbed 3 times and robbed of 5000 THB while waiting for a taxi on Sukhumvit Soi 33, just after 2 AM yesterday morning.

I thought violence against tourists was supposed to be rare. ŬI never felt threatened walking the streets alone at any hour, but one of my travel books claimed Thailand had a homicide rate similar to the US, which I found quite shocking.

Can any locals offer any insights on this?

Did the article mention whether the Japanese guy provoked the attack, Thaiaficionado?
Maybe they were fighting over the taxi?
Maybe the Japanese guy was drunk?
I'm not trying to make it sound like it was his own fault but I don't think we should jump to the conclusion that a guy was knifed three times while just innocently standing and waiting for a taxi.
Also, rather than worry about the number of homicides in Thailand perhaps we should concern ourselves with the number of Farang homicides and the nature of them. Most homicides are domestically related, i.e family members killing other family members. I'm sure it's the same in Thailand.

The article just said the guy was found at 7 AM leaning against a wall with a blood soaked shirt. ŬHe was stabbed twice in the stomach and once in the back. ŬThere weren't a lot of other details. ŬThere was no mention of someone in custody, so be careful.

Hmmm. The article also said that he was waiting for a taxi at 2am! So he was leaning against a wall for a lazy 5 hours waiting for someone to find him?
Sounds a little suspicious to me! I don't think that guy was telling the truth, somehow!

Violence against tourists IS rare.

You read about incidents like this from time to time in London or in any other city the size of Bangkok. It's no big deal.

Tourists who never get attacked (which is what - 99.999%?) just don't make the news. Bear in mind LOS now gets over 10m arrivals annually.

A lot of assassinations in Thailand - also domestic crimes of passion. Rare to get bumped off for no reason, I think.

Crimes of passion... ????  I know my TGF is VERY jealous, but would she KILL me????? I hope she doesn't find out about my slight accident last Saturday night with someone who 'bumped' into me on Sukhumvit rd.
I may be the next!! Watch this space!!

Thanks for raising my comfort level, Arcadius. ŬStill, I'm going to be a little more aware of my surroundings now.

How rare IS rare? (to you) ŬI've been reading the BKK Post and following the local forums (kinda) regular for 6 months. First time I heard of ANY violence directed towards a tourist.

You figure this happened in a city of how many million people? Given the size of the population even 1 stabbing/6months in BKK is plenty safe to me. ŬI can think of many things to fear. Why bother worrying it'll cause you more direct harm than such remote possibility?

Even if you were to face such a situation, just handing it over would most likely have prevented a loss such as this. At least IMHO anyway.

Skip,

I read the Post while I'm here and haven't heard this before, either. ŬI still feel safer here than in a US city but, although it's easy just to say 'hand over your wallet', misunderstandings can often result from language and/or cultural differences.

This guy was lucky ....

Usually they rob Japanese on the way from the airport to the city and throw them out along the highway!

;-)
