WAR ON DARK INFLUENCE

Ministry names 2,700 influential figures

Blacklisted officials urged to see the light

Temsak Traisophon and Yuwadee Tunyasiri

The Interior Ministry has identified around 2,700 influential figures _ 200 of them said to be state officials _ who will be able to avoid legal action only by reporting to authorities and reforming their ways.

Interior Minister Wan Muhamad Nor Matha said the list was not yet final.

Tips from the public were still welcomed, Mr Wan Nor said, and some names could be removed if checks revealed they were innocent of any wrongdoing.

Mr Wan Nor said there would be no violent crackdowns on blacklisted figures provided they reported to authorities and pledged to change their ways.

Those who failed to show up would be kept under a close watch and would be arrested if and when authorities had enough evidence to nail them, he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh said authorities would meet today to study the list before forwarding it to a panel that would screen it for final verification by Justice Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana.

Gen Chavalit said it would be considered very strange if the names of people who were widely known to be influential figures somehow did not appear on the final list.

In the war on dark influence the authorities would first go after gunmen, human traffickers and procurers.

They would also target officials who had helped and protected influential figures, said Gen Chavalit.

OK and even if you expect it  from the government at all levels...HOW ABOUT THE MONK HOOD??:

WAR ON DARK INFLUENCE

Offences by monks on list of misdeeds

Some `holy men' in top financial shape

The National Centre to Defeat Drugs plans to add offences committed by monks to its list of misdeeds perpetrated by mafia and influential figures, after hearing many monks are unusually well-off financially.

Anti-Money Laundering Office secretary-general and National Centre to Defeat Drugs member Pol Col Peeraphan Premphuti said he would propose unusually rich monks be added to the watchlist at today's meeting of the National Centre to Defeat Drugs.

State agencies such as the Education Ministry in conjunction with monastic agencies should keep an eye on monks suspected of being involved in illegal activities or of being unusually rich.

Details would be sent to the Amlo and police in order that any illegally acquired assets could be seized and the monks defrocked to face charges.

It was possible that monks who were unusually rich may have acquired their money from illegal activities or by abusing their monastic power.

They should be stopped from transferring money to bank accounts of close aides, he said.

A former abbot of Wat Koo in Nonthaburi, Phra Khru Nanthaphiwat, was unusually wealthy. He was shot and killed last Wednesday.

Police had suggested the name of Phra Khru Nanthaphiwat be put on a provincial blacklist of crime figures.

Pol Col Peeraphan said Nonthaburi police were trying to figure out how much he possessed.

The assassinated monk was thought to hold 120 million baht held in several bank accounts at Thai Farmers Bank and Thai Commercial Bank. He had transferred 10 million baht from temple funds to bank accounts of people now being checked by police.

He also owned luxury cars, houses and land in Bangkok, Chon Buri and other surrounding provinces.

An investigation was being launched to find the source of the assets.

Even though he was dead the assets could still be confiscated.

Thai Rak Thai MP for Nonthaburi Suchart Bandasak said the abbot had been locked in a dispute concerning a motorcycle taxi queue near the temple. The monk had an interest in the queue and had been at odds with local people.

He admitted he was a distant relative of the monk, and said: ``We respected the abbot despite unpleasant talk about his conduct.''

The abbot often carried a lot of cash with him and the murderer may be someone close, Mr Suchart said.
