I have been reading on a number of webpages about the increase in crime on Phuket. This is put down as people getting desperate for money as there are so few
tourists ??
Are other areas the same ??
Also-
Is just JUST the reason or are there other economic and social reasons why there are so few tourists.
Bad publicity ?? for one ?

Good people don't turn to crime even in bad times as a rule. Probably this increase is from career scum whose alternative income (leeching off BG-girlfriend, scamming tourists, pickpocketing, drug-dealing) has already been undercut.
Haven't seen any increase in BKK or heard about anything like it in PTY.

I don't know what commenters (commentators?) you mean, but it's not like journalistic truth is more important than selling papers anyway. It's probably a non-story until the editor's car gets boosted, then it's a scandal.
