I have not taken my boy any of the canals simply because of this problem, if he was to get splashed by some of that crap I am sure he would be a sick little fella. I was told by a friend that they got splashed by some of this stuff, cannot call it water, and they got very sick after it. I would imagine it would be ten times worse than when the athletes fell from that bridge in ?????? cannot remember name and they all ended up in hospital with a few dead, simply from ingesting the filth in the creek, not from any injuries.

I have been on the soapbox about Thailand's polution problems detering tourism for some time.

I have come to the conclusion that you are thick.
For the LAST time: it's about GLOBAL image, not about actual problems in Thailand. There are NO websites featuring polluted canals, beaches, etc. There are DOZENS of websites promoting and encouraging sex tourism in Thailand. Pracha and his boss probably care MORE about the canals, but they KNOW the sex part gets all the attention, and they are willing to scapegoat farangs, and exploit public opinion to further their OWN agendas.
You can't go on as though it's YOUR country. It isn't.
It's Thailand.

I for one are happy to see the new rise in littering from 200 to 2000 badht. Most of the pollution is pure laziness. I have taken canal rides before when I see Thai's just dump their garbage can out the window into the canal.
As NM suggest, not a good place anymore to take the family and friends visting Thailand.

I hope the shit I saw in the river 20+ years ago has already bio-degraded, otherwise, it's worse than what the article says. 
My friend's father is a doctor whose specialty is infectious disease and I have heard enough horror stories from him that I would prefer to be shot before getting sick from that water in the BKK rivers.
