The crackdown must be on everybody's mind ....

How many new different threads about one subject in just one day?

Don't worry ... there were several crackdowns in the years passed .... bars, music and software piracy, tinted windows, motorcycling without a helmet ...

They all disappear as fast as they appear ...

True, but during those crackdowns the leader of the most powerful country on the planet wasn't a couple months away from making a visit so I would take this one a bit more seriously. Peace

In fact, there was .....

A couple of years there was another crackdown on software piracy when Bill C. and his friends of the Economic Dept. came to visit Bangkok.

Shops in Pantip were raided and not a single piece of software was available .....

Only a few days after Bill left home, business in Pantip was as lively as before ...

Solution:

Take $7000USD, go to Thailand, rent an apartment, study Thai for 6 months full time, go forth in search of your dream woman/women.

Seriously, this Thaksin guy might just be OK...

"Seriously, this Thaksin guy might just be OK"

Perhaps, but I am not so sure.

From reading your many posts, particularly on the 'Nana Plaza Raided' thread, I suspect that we largely agree on what is driving the Thai Gov't to enforce the latest "crackdown" and why most ordinary Thai people overwhelmingly support it.

From the tenor of some of your posts I can't quite tell if your really happy with the "crackdown", or whether you are simply resigned to it and left somewhat bitter at all the Internet and newsmedia attention that has so publicized and perhaps now, in a certain way, spoiled a good thing. ÝThat is not a critical observation of your posts by the way, I often have the mixed feelings I've described above.

I believe we both agree that the Thai governments attempts to restrict the in-your-face lewd shows and nude dancing is probably for the best. ÝPersonally, I don't care much all about these things. ÝI have always found it nice to know that the option to go to rowdy go-go bars was available if I wanted to partake in such a venue, but overall I find the sex shows ridiculous, and I rarely go to any establishments that feature naked polehuggers.

To be honest, I wish far less obnoxious sex tourist types came to Thailand. ÝI really don't like many of the Westerners that camp out in the lower Suk area and in Pattaya. ÝI think many of them are exactly the lousy tourists the government has said they are. ÝInfact, I think almost any city or town in the West would want to avoid attracting some of these people. ÝHow can we blame the Thai's for attempting to do the same.

Part of me actually hopes an extended crackdown gets lots of media and press attention and deters some of the current crop of losers from coming to Thailand. ÝThe truth is, I know for absolute certain that there will always be P4P available in Thailand throughout my lifetime. ÝIf one has any real understanding of the state of affairs in the Kingdom, they will know that prostitution is so ingrained in society that it could take countless years and a decades long economic boom to really see any significant diminishment. ÝIt would also take a serious change in the way the society raises its young men, and I don't see any sign of said change. Crackdowns on go-gos and sex shows do not effect me one iota - nor do they have any impact whatsover on the overall rate of prostitution. ÝActually, I would argue that the number of girls entagling themselves in the scene is actually increasing in some ways if you factor in the numbers of middle class, university and office girls that are dabbling on the edges. ÝAnd if a somewhat less notorious scene will help Thailand develop a better image, and keep pedophiles, football hooligans and other lowlife scum out I am all for it.

The problem I have with PM Thaksin is what I believe to be his anti-democratic tendencies and his general contempt for the new Constitution. ÝI believe he thinks he knows what is best, and be damned any silly civil liberty or accepted rule of law that might interfere with his policies and plans. ÝFurther, I think much of his economic policy which has resulted in short term gain, will ultimately result in long term disaster - but that is a debate for another time and place.

Sure, many Thai leaders have flouted the rule of law, have been utterly corrupt and were haplessly incompetent. ÝThaksin however is a democratically elected PM with a party so powerful, and a people so mesmerized by his past business success that much of the Thai population almost unquestionably trusts most anything he does. ÝI don't think that is healthy, infact I find it dangerous. ÝWhen journalists occassionally take a stand against his media intimidation tactics, Ýthe public largely shrugs and turns a blind eye. ÝGive Thaksin a chance they say, so what if the media isn't free to report and write whatever they want. ÝMost of Thaksin's populist crap is just that - crap. ÝSame rabbit leaders from around the world try to pull out of their hat whenever they feel the need to rally the sheeple. ÝThe difference is, Thaksin has with him so much hope and trust from the people that they seem to willing to buy into virtually anything he says and does. ÝTypically when leaders push the nationalist, anti-foreigner stuff the message loses popularity quickly since it always fails to solve any real problems and is ultimately mired in general cynicism by the public at large. ÝThaksin has toned that sort of rhetoric down a bit, but it is still very present in the tone of his administration and the comments of his ministers and advisors. ÝThai's need Thai's he implies (what would you expect from a political party calling itself Thai Loves Thai), we don't really need anyone else. ÝSounds good, but it is total B.S. in todays interconnected world and it will not help solve any of the problems the population faces.

I hope for the best where it comes to the economic, cultural and political future of Thailand, but I have serious reservations about PM Thaksin. ÝBut then, I am obviously not Thai - and these are ofcourse issues for them to decide. ÝWe can only observe and accept that for good or ill, Thai's will chart their own future.

Would like to catch up with you sometime for a beer or five as I find your commentary and opinions often very insightful. When will you be back in the Kingdom?

HD,

I'm no fan of Thaksin, either, for much the same reasons you put so well. ÝNever much cared for the inherent scapegoating that comes with the party name, either. ÝThai Rak Thai begs to blame foreigners for problems anyone can see as attributable to the corrupt power structure we all know and love

My "Thaksin might be OK" comment was facetious, but holds some truth: if the 'crackdown' discourages some of the low-life, it won't have been for naught. ÝI think you put this very well in your post.

One thing I find hilarious is the indignation of some of the posters here, who worry that their vacation plans might be spoiled by the 'crackdown'. ÝI find it a 'crack up'...

And I think you are the first guy who tracks with my feelings on the quality of the current crop of tourists. ÝThe go-go bars went a LONG time (I remember back to the days when Saphan Kwai was a farang hangout), and there was NEVER a crackdown from the government level. ÝPetty squabbles over tea money, and patronage rippled the pond now and again, but the big boys paid no heed.

Now, the confluence of the world stage and the over-the-top behavior of more recent discoverers of the scene has created a pimple too big to ignore, and a correction is in order.

I have never been a big fan of go-gos, either, but there presence was somehow comforting ÝI could always stop by for a drink and a wink, and sort of touch base with that side of my psyche, and put it to bed for a while...

Anyway, if things get quiet for a while, and Tijuana starts to look good to the cyber sex tourists, no skin off my nose...

As for when I will be in town, I'm at a loss to know right now. ÝMaybe soon, and for good, or maybe after another year or so. ÝA lot of uncertainty in the Sup house just now...definitely look forward to a beer with you then.

Hehehehe. ÝYa, agreed. ÝI strikes me as being about as selfish as humanly possible.

I think this might be the attitude your refering to:

What are the Thai's thinking!!! ÝWe're bringing in hundreds of dollars and supporting THEIR economy. ÝHow could they not want us loiterning around lower Sukhumvit with their daughters in tow? ÝDamned ungrateful bastards! Does this mean I won't be able to get a blowjob from the Robinsons girls in the Kids apparal section? Rotton moral crusaders the bunch of them are.

LOL

Never mind that most every Democratic Western country these people come from would shut down this blatant prostitution in a heartbeat.

I try to keep a more open mind about it now though. ÝI suppose I can understand that people are honestly making vacation plans counting on a certain situation existing. ÝTo hear that something might disrupt this Ýperfect adult playground sends many into fits of indignation and bitterness. ÝI don't think most people are really considering the weakness of their position, they are only thinking of their own holiday plans. ÝHuman nature I suppose.

"Anyway, if things get quiet for a while, and Tijuana starts to look good to the cyber sex tourists, no skin off my nose"

Agreed. ÝBut really, for those that know the Kingdom beyond Sukhumvit, there are so many opportunities for P4P that no "crackdown" should deter a pleasant holiday.

"A lot of uncertainty in the Sup house just now...definitely look forward to a beer with you then."

Okay then, good luck getting everything straightened out. ÝI think I have a Nov trip lined up, but will definately be in BKK in Feb, so if your around in those time frames look me up and we can catch a few drinks somewhere.

The LAST remaining saving grace: learning Thai is MUCH more effort than most of the Sukhumvit dimwits will EVER tolerate. ÝKind of the price of admission to the REAL Thailand, and the price remains pretty much constant...

cheers,
