It is with much disappiontment that this year's work permit renewal for alien workers is carried out this time round. The date stated was from 4th Sept to 25 Sept 2003. The last registrations was in July for those that hold some form of indentification from last year work permit renewal. They were given about 3 months temp. permit which is to be renewed once again this month. First they need to have a medical check up and certified by the hospital to be fit. Then they will bring the documents to the work permit renewal exercise area in Sa La Kang to renew. ( ChiangMai city ) The day before, on 24 th Sept 2003, Many alien workers were not given the chance to have medical check up. They were told that there is no more appointment time slot for them. Those that went ealier ( eg. 22 or 23 Sept were given appointment dates to go for check up on 24 Sept & 25 Sept ) Then they went to Sa La Kang to ask if there is any way to renew their permit. It was back in square one telling them to have medical check up. In this case, I find it most pitiful that those that wanted to have medical checks now were declined. This raise few points which I hope that the good government can explain. 1) If the hospital cannot cope with the number of check ups, why not extend the renewal date as in previous year?? 2) It is not late on the part of the alien workers to go for medical check up. It is still within the specified period for renewal. 3) Some alien workers need to wait for the money from salary etc to go for the check up which cost 1,300 baht and another 1,800baht for the work permit. Thus they might be the last few to go for the check up on 24h Sept. Why the officials over seeing this exercise is not aware of this 'problem' ? Now, next come the question. WHO is at fault if they are found not have have 'VALID' work permit?? That poor worker will be deported and the employer fined or jailed. Is that the way the government want to reduce the number of alien workers? I find this most disturbing as it is not a fair way things should be done. What can those without the medical checks certificate do now? Wait to be caught working illegally? What can those employers do now? Get new workers? What is the government agency that oversee this exercise going to do? The over crowding and over quota for check ups at the hospital or at the work permit renewal office is not the fault of those alien workers. I hope that this can lend a vioce for those many innocent temp. work permit holders. The government can do something to rectify the matter. It is only fair to put them on proper documentation as they have went to renew their temp. woke permit in July. There will be similar problems in the southern part of Thailand too. Any of our friends here can better advise? I believe some of them also moonlight in the bars with those valid work permit. But that is another story.......

Yurune, Yes indeed. It cost the alien workers ( from neigbouring countries in any profession are classified as 'alien worker) 1,300 baht. The work permit itself would cost another 1,800 baht for documentations etc. It will be easy only of it cost them 60 baht. BTW, most of them are earning about 2,500 baht each month. So , you can see it is not that 'easy' for them to pay both.
