One night in Rangoon? Why not move the party? Burmese food is better than Thai food and to be frank about it one ignorant farm girl is as good as the next. +++ http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=3547962 U.S. Sanctions Drive Myanmar Jobless Into Sex Trade Thu October 2, 2003 11:25 AM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. economic sanctions on Myanmar have put an estimated 40,000 people in its garment industry out of work and appear to have driven some women into the sex trade, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday. In prepared testimony to a congressional committee, U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state Matthew Daley said the sanctions imposed on Myanmar's military rulers on July 28 had disrupted its economy and hit the garment sector the hardest. The sanctions were imposed after a May 30 clash between supporters of the government and of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was subsequently placed in detention at an undisclosed location. The Nobel Prize laureate was moved to house arrest last week at the Yangon villa where she has been confined for more than half of the last 14 years. International efforts to force the military rulers to free her have so far failed. "Within the first month of sanctions, we estimate that more than 40,000 garment sector jobs were lost. In the long term, the garment sector will likely lose 100,000 jobs, most of which are filled by young women," Daley said in written testimony provided to reporters. "We have credible reports that the concern voiced by some (nongovernmental organizations) concerning the fate of these women is well founded and that some have entered the flourishing illegal sex and 'entertainment' industries," he said. "Such effects are unfortunate, but Burma's greatest misfortune is the junta's misrule and the suffering of all the Burmese people, every day, under this military dictatorship," Daley added, referring to the country by its colonial name. The official said that much of the Myanmar's garment industry was already threatened by the impending end in 2005 of quotas under the World Trade Organization's Agreement on Textiles and Clothing, saying it was unlikely the textile jobs would return to Myanmar even if U.S. sanctions were lifted.

If those in power think the way I suspect they think the above congressional report will result in the next APEC meeting being held in rangon.

Well, Mr. liftoff, if that does happen it will be one heck of a suprise because... Myanmar isn't a member of APEC, and is closer to the Indian Ocean than the Pacific. And that's good, because no way do I want sloppy seconds after Bush, Toxin, etc. A 3-way with Arroyo and some local talent might be okay though. "Gloria, oh baby, GloooriiiunnnNNHHHHH!!!" Met a few Burmese in Chiang Mai earlier this year. Not many but one girl I spoke with had slipped over the border about four months earlier with her brother. They were both working in bars in Chiang Mai and were sending money home to the family in Burma. She clearly regarded Thailand as the "land of milk and honey" compared to home. When you see how minimal life is in Thailand makes you appreciate just how bad things are in Burma at the moment.
