546 foreigners arrested in three-day crackdown

BANGKOK: Tourist police have arrested 546 foreigners, most of them from Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, ahead of the Apec summit.
Pol Maj-Gen Chatchawal Suksomchit, assistant chief of the Central Investigation Bureau, said the arrests were made in a three-day crackdown on criminals and illegal immigrants.
The crackdown was part of security for the Apec summit. Charges including causing annoyance to tourists, working without permits, illegal entry, prostitution and drug dealing were laid. Tourist police also arrested 27 guides for working without a licence.

Thai police arrest Singaporean over Goh e-mail threats
BANGKOK - Police have arrested a man who allegedly threatened to attack Singapore's Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong when he comes to Bangkok for a summit of world leaders, a police official said Thursday.
Kevin Tia, a Singaporean, was arrested in the Thai capital late Wednesday and "is being detained on charges of intimidating and insulting a foreign leader'' in e-mail messages to friends, a police colonel said on condition of anonymity.
The suspect's age was not immediately known, and it was unclear what penalty he would face if found guilty.
Goh and 20 other world leaders, including U.S. President George W. Bush, will gather in Bangkok from Oct. 20-21 for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting. Thailand will deploy some 20,000 soldiers and police to provide security during the summit.
Tia was arrested at his apartment on Sathorn Road after he allegedly sent e-mails to friends in Singapore saying he hated Goh and planned to attack him when he comes to the Thai capital for the APEC meeting, the officer said.
Police seized the man's computer from his rented room, and he is being detained at an undisclosed location pending trial, said a Crime Suppression division officer.
Singaporean Embassy officials were not immediately available for comment.
