Wednesday, October 15, 2003 THAILAND Press pack makes most of free beer and foot rubs ASSOCIATED PRESS and AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE Reporters covering the forum have been treated to more than a taste of Thailand's renowned hospitality - they've been served thousands of dollars worth of free beer and massages, a report said yesterday. Journalists were being given food and beverage vouchers worth 3,000 baht (about HK$590) in press kits and some had exchanged them for beer, The Nation reported. A salesperson at Bangkok's Queen Sirikit Convention Centre said about 170,000 baht worth of beer was given away on Sunday, the first day of media registration, before staff were told to stop handing it out. In addition to complimentary food and beverages, journalists are getting foot massages from 10 traditional masseuses, who will provide 30-minute sessions. The government is paying the masseuses 500 baht to treat at least 10 customers per day and another 50 baht for each additional customer up to a maximum of 1,000 baht. "All of you are working so hard, all day and all night. You need to relax," Thai foot masseur Chavalit Janthavong said. Women reporters in high heels, he says, are especially vulnerable to fatigue and foot problems. "That's the worst - very dangerous," he said, eyeing a passing reporter's 8cm sandals. Several journalists have taken his advice, stretching out in plush lounge chairs and letting masseurs soak their sore feet in a Thai herbal solution before receiving a professional rub-down. Usually resigned to being treated like cattle, they were appreciating the touch of luxury. "It's good, yes, very good," said a rejuvenated Thai reporter.
