Maybe they read my posting ? Apec bill: $43m It was money well spent, says Thaksin BANGKOK - Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said the government spentslightly over one billion baht (S$43 million) to host the Apec summit, but it was money well spent. He also denied local media reports that the government had spent as much as five billion baht on the event, according to the Bangkok Post. The Prime Minister said that every baht spent on hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit was worth it, and urged the Thai people to brace themselves for *'DRASTIC CHANGES' * in the next three years following the meeting. In talking about the benefits, Mr Thaksin said: 'In Japan, the Apec summit was on every channel. In terms of tourism promotion alone, it is invaluable. 'In three years' time, you will see drastic changes resulting from this meeting.'Investments will increase and many people will move their production bases to Thailand.'He thanked the people for their patience and cooperation, saying the event would not have gone so smoothly without their sacrifice. 'It's a great relief because everyone has lent a hand. It's not possible for me to say a personal thanks to everyone.'The Prime Minister insisted the government was frugal with Apec spending. 'We made use of what we have. And it was very kind of His Majesty the King to allow the government to use the royal barges and the royal palaces. They are a beauty in themselves.' He said he was happy with every aspect of the summit although bilateral talks between 21 Apec leaders did not receive much media attention. Thailand had good relations with three superpowers - Russia, China and the United States. 'Everyone is satisfied with the form and the content. 'People believe me when I say Apec will never be the same after Bangkok.'Meanwhile, retailers in the Ratchaprasong area said they were disappointed with sales during the Apec summit, saying road closings in the area discouraged shoppers. Executives of leading shopping centres in the area - Central World Plaza, Central Chidlom, Gaysorn - and at The Emporium farther east on Sukhumvit Road, agreed that local shoppers were reluctant to go to their complexes on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.A source at Central Department Store said sales to Apec delegates would not offset a big fall in local spending. Before the summit began early this week, most retailers had anticipated a 10 per cent rise in sales during the period.
