Sant warns of terror attacks
Police chief believes city among targets

Terrorist groups are just waiting for a security let-up to launch attacks in 12 areas of Thailand, national police chief Sant Sarutanont warned yesterday.
Pol Gen Sant said his information came from intelligence reports.
The police chief also said he believed Bangkok was among the targets although it was not specifically mentioned in the intelligence reports.
On Monday the Royal Thai Police Office ordered metropolitan and Special Branch police to step up security in Bangkok, especially at business centres and places where foreigners hang out.
The move was prompted by fears that international terrorists may join forces with separatist bandits in the South to launch terror attacks in the country.
A source at the Special Branch Bureau said the Royal Thai Police Office had radioed its warning to police units before the New Year holiday. They were instructed to be on alert for possible untoward incidents, particularly at popular tourist spots in Bangkok and the provinces.
As a result, security was tightened in the capital city and tourist provinces including Chiang Mai, Phuket, Songkhla, Samui island off Surat Thani province, the source said.
Immigration police were instructed to strictly screen foreign visitors to the country, the source added.
Deputy metropolitan police commissioner Pol Maj-Gen Surasak Suttharom said he had ordered police units to continue giving "the best security" for foreign embassies and major tourist spots in Bangkok.

What I would do if I was in charge.... Back channel talks with the Mujahedeen down there, and give them a "freebie" against sex-tourists, in exchange for 15 people they wanted to get rid of anyhow plus 3 years of peace against Thais, police in the south, etc. I wouldn't let it go down in BKK though, I'd make 'em do it in Pattaya, and probably pick a German bar rather than getting the USA riled up.

Stranger things have happened !
Interestingly there is going to be a big debate about plans in the next Queen's Speech about security measures against terrorists. MP's are quoted as saying the measures are 'flawed'. Civil Rights Groups (why have they made that word sound dirty now?) are up in arms.
In all the dreadful years with all the terrible things the I.R.A. did there were never security measures like this !
So what's the difference ?
