I will tell you one thing about this. Whenever footage is shown on Thai TV - rare in itself - the video is heavily processed; done in such a way that makes the clip look older, somewhat like 70's quality video.

"On 24th May 1992 Prime Minister General Suchinda Khraprayun resigned his post and an interim government administered the country until the elections in September 1992. " He resigned because the King told him he must go - "you cannot treat my people this way" - I heard that once it was known the King wanted him to go, even his own troops would no longer acknowledge him, all his authority just vanished. Having seen the respect the Thais have for their King I believe it.

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2000/apr2000/thai-a03.shtml In May 1992, after another lengthy period of military dictatorship, the king was once again involved in salvaging bourgeois rule amid growing political upheaval. For weeks students, joined by a growing number of workers, academics, young professionals and business people, had been protesting against the continuing domination of military rule. On May 17 a demonstration at the Democracy Monument in central Bangkok swelled to 200,000 demanding the resignation of military strongman General Suchhinda Kraprayoon. The following night the military gave its answer: heavily armed troops and police fired on a large rally at the same spot, killing thousands.
