I appreciate the optimism, but I seriously doubt they will budge on either of the two. Everytime you see a news broadcast or hear a report it is almost always focused on one of these two places. These locations are at the doorstep of their pressures. Obviously these places are two of the biggest nightspots they have in BKK. If they didn't already declare them to be included in the zones then chances are they never will. But I will hope along with you...

In my opinion Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui are the only places that stand any kind of chance since they cater almost exclusively to tourists.

Respite for Pattaya, Phuket?

Nightspots in Pattaya and Phuket can make official requests for nightlife zoning, but there will be no exceptions made for other entertainment venues wishing to stay open beyond midnight, Deputy Interior Minister Pracha Maleenont said yesterday.

From March 1, all nightspots outside specified nightlife zones must close at midnight while the new closing times will be 2am for discos and hostess bars inside the zones and 1am for restaurants featuring musical performances.

Mr Pracha said the government would strictly enforce the zoning policy as of March 1.

Deputy Prime Minister Purachai Piumsombun had made a careful decision on the issue, so no groups could be given exemptions, Mr Pracha said.

Mr Purachai said businesses would be affected by the change, but they would have to respect the law and make adjustments.

However, nightspots in Pattaya and Phuket, which are tourist cities, can ask the social order panel, chaired by Mr Purachai, to consider declaring their areas nightlife zones.

"If you are in a tourist area and your business does not affect children or you have sound reasons, you can make a request to a committee [headed by Deputy Prime Minister Purachai Piumsombun] for your area to be declared a designated entertainment zone," he said. If the committee approved the request, the Interior Ministry would announce more designated entertainment zones.<<<<<<Sound like Nana ans SC are in that case no? Tourist area, no kids around...

Maybe (only MAYBE) all this non-sense will end....

I know these new rules are a hard realization for many (including myself) but I will attempt to put my own positive barstool, non-expat perspective on the issue.

Maybe this will actually keep me on budget, I'll drink a few less beers (which actually might not be such a bad idea if I'm drinking everynight for 2 to 3 weeks at a time), and I'll get more time with my LTs.

In the past I would usually drink until about 3 or 4am in the morning, take my LT back to the hotel, maybe stay awake for another 2 to 3 hours at the most and then pass out. Now, I'll be making my way back to the hotel around 1230 or 230am (if I'm in the entertainment zone) and actually get my money's worth for a true LT.

The only problem is, every hard-d*ck in BKK is going to be in the same area during those short periods of time. But fortunately, the girls usually outnumber us by a significant amount. If the bars start laying off the girls, then hopefully they'll just be more freelancers which means no BFs.

When the bars close, it's not like I have to go back to the hotel and twidle my thumbs. Maybe I'll take a stroll down the street and take in the sites (hordes of girls filling the streets I'm sure). By that time I'll be liquered up trying to decide on my nightcap. If I hook up with some ladies, maybe I'll hit up a spot they know of for some after hours fun, which I'm confident is available.

So I can't go to a MPs until 6pm. Who cares, that's the best time to go anyways. If I need a massage in the daytime I'll probably go with the hotel's service, which will most likely offer extras if I so desire.

The no daytime pool playing and beer drinking sucks, but what can you do... I guess I can use that time to get a nice meal or a massage at the hotel, or maybe even do something cultural for once, maybe...

So as far as I see the situation, yeah it's pretty terrible, but I believe I can make the best out of it.

I still believe the LOS can be the LOS...

Plus you CAN drink at the hotel. Just hit the store, buy a few drinks or order up room service. Like I mentioned in another post/thread. There are ALWAYS options to get your drink and freak on.

Do you not feel however Dagul, that part of the enjoyment is the hunt for the women? The new rules would take a big chunk of that away wouldnt they as they would turnh the hunt into more of an investigation to find where the better girls are? Yes you can probably find them wandering around sukhumvit after midnight but I sued to use this board to find out which bars the better girls were in. Now we may have to locate them by the street lamps they work under or the back alley they now reside in!

I totally agree with you Power24. I will miss the leisurely aspect of it all. Now it is going to be like starting a race when 9pm hits. I can just picture it, everyone scrambling to find the best girls before the music stops. The owners are probably going to be begging the girls to hustle those lady drinks to make up for the lost income. And all the BGs are going to be fighting each other to snatch their ATM for the night. It's going to be a rowdy, chaotic 3 hours in NEP and Soi Cowboy.

Now here comes my positive outlook again,

Seriously, in the past, how many nights did we actually go out before 11pm. And like me, I'm guessing you probably stayed out until around 4ish, which is a total of around 5 hours. Pretty much everynight I had my lady in sight within 3 or 4 of those hours.

Dealing with the present situation, if we hit up the bars at 9pm then switch to an entertainment zone until 2am that still gives us 5 hours of BG search and destroy time. The only downer is everyone is going to be doing the same thing, at the same places, at the same times. Luckily there are multiple entertainment zones in BKK. No time is really lost, just facing a busier environment from now on.

I'm also going to have to adjust my sleeping pattern. I get so sleepy from 5 - 11pm while in the LOS. I have to cut out those evening naps and adjust to the time-zone differences a little better. All I need to do is drag myself out of my room, have a cup of coffee and a smoke, and head out down the street and I'll be good to go.

Evidently accoridng to tourism heads there will be minimal impact on Thailands tourist industry. Dont worry everyone...everythings will be fine...NOT..!..same as Thailand doesnt have bird flu!

See minimal impact in early closing hours

Nondhanada Intarakomalyasut

Tourism leaders acknowledged yesterday that there might be some negative repercussions from the new early closing rules, particularly on pub owners located outside the specified nightlife zones.

However, they said the impact on the entertainment industry will be limited, while a major alcoholic beverage manufacturer downplayed the gloom-and-doom predictions made by bar owners.

Business operators have shown mixed reactions to the new rules announced by the cabinet earlier this week.

According to Tanes Petchsuwan, international public relations director for the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the shortened hours and zoning rules are unlikely to have significant repercussions on the tourism industry.

He said the TAT's new focus was on promoting natural and cultural attractions, positioning the country's night life as only a complimentary service.

Suparerk Surangura, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, also agreed that the impact would be minimal, saying tourists did not usually go out very late as they had tight tour schedules to follow during the daytime.

But Niti Kongrut, director of the local TAT office in Pattaya, said the government should consider including tourist destinations like Pattaya, Phuket and Samui in the zoning.

''The government should not rush ahead. It should discuss the matter with all parties involved before implementing the rules,'' said Mr Niti.

However, the new rules were unlikely to drive a large number of tourists away from Thailand, he said.

Prakit Chinamornpong, secretary of the Thai Hotels Association (THA), said it was still unclear whether the rules will be applied to only particular types of bars or if restaurants in hotels would be forced to comply.

He said the new closing times would affect tourism to some extent. ''If the impact starts to become significant, we may have to submit a petition to the government to reconsider the decision.''

The manager of a popular Sukhumvit bar _ an area not included in the nightlife zone _ said his establishment could be forced out of business.

''We're all very scared right now. It's not just the business, but [the regulations] could affect people's lives to a serious degree. People are going to lose their jobs and some expats living in Thailand may move to Singapore or the Philippines where they don't have to be told what time to go to bed,'' said the bar manager.

While Singapore has adjusted its rules to extend the hours of entertainment spots to attract tourists, Thailand is going in the reverse direction, he said.

More importantly, the zones which include Patpong, Ratchadaphisek and Royal City Avenue are not the areas catering to quality tourists.

''Patpong is a nightlife spot known to be very seedy; it's not for clean fun. RCA is associated with Thai crowds and Thai music and all the other Thai things that don't attract tourists,'' he said.

But Thanit Thammasukti, advisor to Beer Thai, the bottler of the Beer Chang, predicted little effect on sales.

''By midnight, most people are already drunk and will stop ordering drinks anyway,'' he said.
