I was warned about trouble in the South by a well informed and astute expat-Quote:- "Forget about midnight closing this what worries me!" Thai PM reshuffles cabinet By Kylie Morris BBC in Bangkok Thailand's Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, has reorganised his cabinet, an apparent recognition of public concern over continuing civil unrest in the country's south. Both the defence and interior ministers are likely to be replaced and there is to be a new finance minister. Thaksin Shinawatra has often voiced concern over the South The cabinet reshuffle is the eighth since the ruling party stormed to power three years ago. Government sources say as many as a dozen ministers are affected, but most significant are those who hold the defence and interior affairs portfolios. Those are the posts which have borne responsibility for dealing with civil unrest in southern Thailand, particularly the provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala. More than 50 people have died in the south since the start of the year in small scale violence, mainly directly at government officials and police and army officers. In turn, leaders of the mainly Muslim community, have expressed their concern that martial law still operates in some districts, and that Islamic schools have been targeted unfairly. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has repeatedly expressed his displeasure at the persistent security problems in the south. Now he has removed from their posts both the Defence Minister, Thammarak Isarangura, and the Interior Minister, Wan Noor, who is also the only Muslim in the cabinet. Both are expected to take up other cabinet posts. The ruling party is thick with factional arrangements and any moves taken to appease the public will only have been undertaken through a process of gentle political negotiation. The appointment of the new finance Minister is unlikely to cause waves in the financial sector. Thaksin's trusted Deputy, Somkid Jatusripitak, will return to the key economic post, after vacating it only a year ago.

Wasn't the Interior Minister responsible for the proposed early bar closings? Glad to see a change there.
