The number of websites being blocked by the police continues to climb.
As of Wednesday it was 12,001. Youšll know when you come across one the
blocked sites the URL will lead to a page with the title 'Police
Alert', where you are 'alerted' to the fact that police have closed
the site to protect your tattered moral fabric.
It then reads:
"Sorry, the web site you are accessing has been closed by Royal Thai
Police due to inappropriateness such as pornography, gambling or contain
any information which is deemed to violate national security."
Disturbingly, the number of sites classified as 'threats to national
security' has moved past 800 (around 7 per cent of the total).
It seems incredible that so many sites have been set up with the intent
to threaten the sovereignty of Thailand.
Who determines them as threats, and what are the guidelines?
The majority of the closed sites are classified as pornographic, both
Thai and foreign. Numerous websites trading in pirated movies and
software have also been shut down. Whoever is doing all this has also
managed to bar the international gaming portal Ladbrokes.
The Royal Thai Police keep a running total of closed sites on its
website, which is about the only thing on the site that is up to date.
It's in Thai, but the excellent http://www.2bangkok.com website has translated
it to English (see below).
There seems an ad hoc approach to closures. For example, this week saw
a big upsurge in the number of foreign pornographic sites closed.
Many sites are getting around the ban by opening under a different
domain name every time they're closed. This means quite a few have been
closed a number of times, which inflates the total number of closures.

This week, Britain and America agreed to set up a group to investigate ways of stopping violent internet sex sites in a meeting between Home Secretary David Blunkett and US Deputy Attorney General Jim Comey.
Back to that good old censorship debate.
