BANGKOK, Thailand -- At least 97 people have been killed in co-ordinated attacks on security posts in Thailand in the deadliest fighting this year in the country's predominantly Muslim south.

Black-clad bandits attacked 15 police stations in three southern provinces -- Yala, Pattani and Songkhla -- killing three policemen and one army officer.

More than 150 people have died since unrest began in early January in Thailand's restive Muslim-dominated southern provinces, but Wednesday's violence is the worst single incident to date.

"In Yala alone the insurgents attacked six targets and at least 45 of them were killed. We lost two police officers and seven were injured," Yala governor Boonyasit Suwanarat it told a news conference.

The largely Muslim province of Yala is 1,300 kilometers (780 miles) south of the capital, Bangkok.

Local television showed pictures of police and troops taking up positions in rural areas, as well as scenes of wounded border troops being unloaded from trucks onto stretchers.

At least one dead soldier was shown lying in the wreckage of a destroyed building. It is not known yet whether the attackers are Muslim separatists.

Bangkok has so far blamed the trouble on local gangsters exploiting disaffected local Malay-speaking Muslim youths who feel few emotional ties to the predominantly Buddhist country.

Last week 50 government buildings were torched in a single night and fears are growing that Thai citizens may soon become increasingly drawn into the violence.

The government is also facing criticism for its handling of the violence amid fears that outside terrorist forces could be stirring the trouble.

Over the last 2 days I have been unable to get through over the phone (mobile) to my friends in LOS.

I get "Network Bussy" and it sure ain't here on my side. Experienced the same problem anyone?,

and may it be related to the violent events, more traffic, more security etc.?

Ok, let's face it...
Facts of the day:
1. The most prestigious University of Thailand suddendly changes admission's regulations thus the doughter of the prime minister gets in even if she has a GPA score insufficient and lower than the GPA of the maids of the faculty...side effect, some good students lose their chances for a better life...
2. Hundreds of people killed in the South...they call them rebels, I call them people fed up with the bulling actions of this goverment.
Both facts share the same root: the arrogance and dictatorial behaviour of the Shinawatra Royal Family....
During the '70 score of students died under the fire of the army because they were asking for democracy....today hundreds of Thais guily of being "rebels" suffers because the Country has lost its democracy....
Again, it's a sad day for Thailand and its people...but somehow, they deserve it for not being able to stand up for their own rights and being slaves of the money....

Caronte, fair comments.
Count also for Thaksins daughter the fact that she might have had a preview of some entrance exam papers...... She might want to stay at McD.

Around a 100 people killed (maybe 30 more at the mosque??). 3 arrested. How can the Thai police and army be so effective in getting rid of all the evidence as well??? Many people have been, again, made victim. If they ever were actual 'insurgents', we will never know...

Frankly, who gives a sh_t except you guys who have to live there, by choice or necessity.

As long as Thailand continues to ply us with the happy hookers they specialise in churning out, I can't see any problems at all.

Caronte - sounds like a lot of misinterpreted bs to me.

Playing the 'disgruntled citizenry' card is all nice and good, but there's afew holes in your theory:

- this kind of unrest and civil 'disobendience' does not seem to permeate all of Thailand -- which it would if your theory were to hold water.
- only the extreme south is affected, which just happens to be Muslim influenced.
- how does your theory explain the killing of monks by slitting their throats?

This is, plain and simple, local or outside influenced Muslim extremist factions doing what they apparently do best -- be extremely stupid, illiterate, and violent.

Either way, I agree that this is not good for Thailand, but for the very reason that this is becoming an issue for the Thaksin administration, it will not be long until more violent means of 'resolutions' will be applied. Sociology.

According to Thai government spokesman it is not religion related..... go figure!!
According to him it was politically motivated. Was he suggesting that the democrats are the masterminds? Or the TRT politicians earlier pointed at?
