I tried booking a room in July with both the Pan Pacific Hotel and Banyan Tree Hotel and both are fully booked.
Here is what the Banyan Tree travel agent told me:
I have rechecked with another staff today and she informed me that all rooms are fully booked due to the AIDS conference. Many 4-5-stars hotels are fully booked in July.
Before I heard the news - when I found out the Pan Pacific was sold out I thought it was probably some Japanese business conference and I immediately got worried that Patpong would be overun by the high rollers paying up the yingyang.
Now what? What kind of impact do you think this type of conference will have if any while they are in town (besides taking up all the good hotels) ?
Impact: none. As for many big cities, conferences are taking place all the time. It might be either an aids conference or a agriculture conference. They just fit in a normal cycle of those 'events'. As long as it is not called APEC... we are OK.
