GGGrrrrrrr !!! I like this Lady ! I saw a documentary about her on TV. Bt1 million bounty on Pornthip Sept 23, 2004 Militants want forensic expert killed because of her investigations: ministry Well-known forensics expert Dr Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunan, currently in the deep South helping to investigate recent violence, has received death threats aimed at stopping her from uncovering the identities of militants, a high-ranking Justice official said yesterday. Deputy Permanent Secretary Manit Suthaporn said he had information that Pornthip had received death threats since she began working to link regional deaths with specific attackers. “Evidence from several cases has undergone forensic testing. Clues have emerged as to the identities of the those responsible,” he said. Militants have reportedly offered a bounty of Bt1million to anyone who takes her life, he added. Despite the threats, Pornthip has vowed to continue her one-month mission, ending in mid-October, Manit said. Violence in the predominantly Muslim region flared in early January and has claimed more than 400 lives since then. Attacks have occurred on an almost daily basis, despite major attempts to contain it. Defence Minister Chettha Thanajaro said security officials found it difficult to control the violence because they are unable to distinguish between local residents and Islamic militants. The minister said he had ordered decks of cards with photographs of militants to be distributed to troops to enable them to identify specific insurgents. The idea came from the distribution of playing cards bearing images of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and his lieutenants by US-led coalition forces. Chettha said each card would show a different photo of a wanted militant. Dozens of arrest warrants for militants have been issued to date. Meanwhile, a school teacher in Pattani was injured in a gun attack yesterday morning while riding his motorcycle to work, prompting the school to close. Kowit Seubpradit, 47, was shot four times with a 9mm pistol while travelling from his home to Ban Kopoh School in Pattani’s Nong Chik district. Police said Kowit routinely refused a police escort between his home and the school, preferring to travel alone on his motorcycle, and thus making himself an easy target for gunmen. The attack prompted a three-day closure of the school, as the 390 students and 16 other teachers feared another attack. The school will reopen on Monday, school principal Prasert Rujira said. “Kowit chose to use his own vehicle so he could come to school early,” he said. All other school personnel have been told to travel with a police escort. More than 2,000 school teachers in the deep South want to leave the region to escape the unrest. They can no longer tolerate living and working in fear, a representative said. ........................................................................ © 2000 Nation Multimedia Group
